(The NCAA handbook and specific rule are linked at the bottom of this post: page 80.)
I don't know if you guys caught this or not. I'm not going to read back through the game thread to see anxiety attacks: haven't opened the GB&U. So, if this is a repeat?
If you look at the game book you'll see Proctor is credited with a rush, not a reception. It was a backwards pass, behind the line of scrimmage.
Backwards pass. You may think this is trivial, I respect the hell out of how it was executed.
The rules state guys that are five guys on the line (50-79) and they aren't illegible to receive. Easy enough. If you are going to run a tackle eligible play you have to inform the officials, "it's a tackle eligible passing play" or the like.
Except: Backwards pass is considered a running play hence Proctor credited with the rushing yards. The "hidden" thing I like here is there isn't a stipulation the offense tell the officials anything. Proctor was a runner, not a receiver...that's one of the keys to the play from the collective minds of the offensive staff.
Pate laughing at the end of the video made me laugh a bit ... but, he's not a receiver.
