Alabama Football’s Jalen Hurts Named to Davey O’Brien Award Watch List

Tide signal-caller one of 26 candidates up for the nation’s top quarterback honor

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts has been named to the 2018 Davey O’Brien Award Watch List announced today by the Davey O’Brien Foundation.

A semifinalist for the award in 2016, Hurts is among 26 players from around the country named to this year’s preseason list. Alabama has never won the O’Brien.

Hurts has compiled a 26-2 record in two seasons as the starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide. The Houston, Texas, native already holds the Alabama career record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 21 and is second in UA career touchdown responsibility with 61 passing and rushing scores. He ranks No. 4 at Alabama with 40 career touchdown passes.

The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The Davey O’Brien Award honors candidates who exemplify Davey O’Brien’s enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics. The 2018 winner will be announced at the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December.

IIRC, doesn't the list automatically include players that had been named on the previous year's list? If true, it would not be surprising to see Jalen's name included. Not that he doesn't deserve to be there, mind you, I'm just saying.

Roll Tide!

Did you play last year? You're on a watch list. It's literally become that inclusive.

Funny how most everyone is throwing JH under the bus....
....He is really working hard......
We shall see....

Define everyone.

Expecting him to get beat out by one of the most physically and mentally talented QB's in the country isn't throwing him under the bus is it?

I agree he's working hard. He will play. Hopefully enough to keep him and pops happy and not make a public fuss.

Most everyone is a lot of people. I doubt that is any where close to accurate. Most everyone loves this guy but the other kid just can do the things He can't. I'm a 60 plus year fan.

You're a little less wrong than I thought. Sorry for misquoting. My apologies sir!

I see a distinct difference in how people talk about the QB position. Some talk about areas where Tua excels. Others, in attempts to prove that point, have chosen to take the approach "look how bad Jalen did here."

I would say the majority of Alabama fans absolutely love Jalen, I agree but there is a VERY, VERY loud minority that go further than just saying "I think Tua is a better QB." They will say things like "Jalen isn't a QB" or "Jalen is a running back playing QB" or just blatantly say he sucks.

Also...60+ year fan.... not changing sign in name though
Agree about Tua...he appears to be the real thing....
I agree ....fans love JH....no reason not to....
But its not a fore gone conclusion who will be the #1 QB..as "most" think

I'm a mix of both. Because I think a mix of both is the truth

Most here have readily discussed Tua's great arm and Jalen's magnificent feet. I would conclude by saying that Tua's feet are running far ahead of the legend of Jalen's arm.

I think the real edge is what Tua will bring mentally (not just over Jalen).... The UGA game confirmed my belief that he has elite mental toughness & confidence. Physical tools are there, just like a lot of QB's, but something about that kid going back to his HS stories and interviews struck me as a freakishly competitive and inspiring individual.
