I've heard this in more than one place, from more than one person, and while it's not getting on my nerves so to speak it certainly qualifies as...well, misguided. Yeah, we'll go with misguided.

"He's not Johnny Manziel but he's pretty darn close."

This has been stated more than just a few times from people trying to make a comparison between Golson and Manziel.

A&M has played three teams in the top ten in total defense. Notre Dame has played three teams in the top 20 in total defense. But for the sake of this discussion I'm going to set aside competition played against and just look purely at the numbers.

Golson:
2,135 yards passing,
11 TDs,
5 INTs,
305 yards rushing,
5 TDs.

Manziel:
3,419 yards,
24 TDs,
8 INTs,
1,181 yards rushing
19 TDs.

For those of you who are mathematically challenged, that's a difference of 2160 yards of total offense, and 27 TD's on the season.

Are they both dual threat quarterbacks? Yes.

Have they both improved throughout the season? Yes.

Are they both good quarterbacks? Yes.

Are they anywhere, in any shape or form, close to each other when it comes to production?

HELL NO!

Now, I realize it is probably tempting to think "Manziel and Golson can't be compared with rushing yards—Manziel runs more and Golson feeds their running backs."

That might work with me IF there wasn't less than 100 yards difference between what Riddick and Wood gained for Notre Dame and what A&M accumulated from their backfield this season.

That's all for now.

I am going to hijack Terry's rant and start my own rant. I am sick of the talking heads on ESPN and elsewhere going on about how our defense has been exposed. To hear them tell it everyone we play can beat us by putting a WR in the slot against our nickel defender. Why even the boogs should have taken advantage of it. Two points.. this issue will be addressed in game preparation, and if it was that damn easy why are we sitting at 12-1.

I feel much better now. Resume Terry's rant.

Manziel was the best thing that could've happenned to 'Bama in preparation for BCSNG. ND better come up w/ something else b/c this team will be drilled to death on defending against that stuff & not just for reasons for the championship but also for when they play A&M the second game of 2013.

Manziel is one of a kind and as good as everybody thinks ND is their QB isn't on the same level as Manziel. If ND is listening to the talking heads about how to beat us and how easy is it is they're just securing another NC to us

Golson should bring a few extra chinstraps... it's going to be a long one for him.

i have a feeling this game could look similar to the 1992 game except that Golson has good running ability and will make a few plays on the ground. He is a good passer but i don't think he's seen many secondaries that will compare to Alabama's (even though ours is a bit down from years past)

I heard the bachelor himself, Jesse Palmer, on Atlanta sports radio yesterday saying how he watched the Texas A&M game again just a few days ago and talked about the difficulty Alabama had defending an offense like Notre Dames'? Really Jesse? He also said that personnel packages from ND would give Alabama fits, something along the lines of one of their RB's ability to play wide receiver and their TE's ability to call down the thunder, catch the football and blah blah blah.

By the way, Golsons' numbers are very comparable to Johnny Football's when it comes to interceptions so there! Go ahead, Jesse! Give that rose to Chip Kelly.

You guys are getting a little sensitive. lol

I don't think you can compare Golson to Manziel at all. They play in totally different offenses. The only comparison you can make is both are mobile QB's. End of story.

I think we actually addressed this one Joe in the SEC Title game. We brought in Geno Smith instead of Vinnie or another one of the safeties. The improved play of Smith, Fulton and others has remedied this problem I do believe.

Sensitive? No, no, no! We LOVE ESPN lavishing praise on your Irish. Hell, we don't stand a chance to hear some say. Alabama plays very well with a chip on its proverbial shoulder so I hope the talking heads at ESPN keep up the good work, especially Coach Holtz!!

Getting on my nerves a bit as stated in the title of this thread? Yes, I'll agree with that in a heartbeat.

Sensitive? Really? Sensitive?

This notion of the two being comparable started from none other than Holtz himself. There's nothing that he can do that will have any effect on my sensitivity. The comment/comparison was asinine. And therein you'll find the reason for this thread.

If there is one thing I'll admit to being a little sensitive about it's stupidity. I have a hard time biding its presence. Unfortunately, being a fan of college football leads me to be exposed to it often.

There's part of this I agree with H.

I do believe their TE and RB can be a threat if lined up against a linebacker or safety when we are in nickel.

Now, here's something I do have a bit of an issue with. This "exposed" mantra.

If you recall, one of many conversations we had pre-season was about how we were going to end up using different personnel packages this year because we didn't have one specific player that could fill multiple roles. Taking the LB corps as example, we talked about the switches we'd see with CJ and Nico.

As to exposure, it didn't catch anyone here off guard. We knew it was coming.

One issue I've had are those that say LSU "exposed" the weakness. Fact of the matter is Ole Miss was the first team that attacked our three safety look. Mississippi State and LSU did as well. The problem lies in while those teams knew the weakness, exploited it during the games, when the fat lady sang it didn't matter—they all still lost.

The difference between those three teams and A&M was Manziel.

Now, what a lot aren't talking about is the switches made during the A&M game. One was the insertion of Nick Perry in the safety rotation because he was better at pass coverage. We slid Dee down to Star, brought in Fulton, and while A&M was still able to move the ball they couldn't do it as well as they had been. That's the primary reason they only scored nine points in the last three quarters of that game.

Georgia did have some success through the air but it wasn't following the blueprint we saw from LSU. What was it? Five plays I believe that went for 15 yards or more? And, those five plays ended up accounting for over 80% of their production in the passing game.

Still, when you look at the final numbers Murray ended up with 1 TD, 1 INT, 265 yards (which is a big number considering our defense) but more importantly he completed less than 55% of his passes. He didn't have a great day, just made a few big plays.

I don't expect Golson to have that kind of production. Why? He's been reading defensive sets for a year now. Murray has three under his belt and still struggled.

ND has the largest fanbase and pulls in the biggest ratings so they are going to ride this while they can to sell that commenrcial time. I quit watching ESPN except for the televised games several years ago. ESPN has dogged Notre Dame for years including this year until the last few games. It wasn't until Herbie came on the OU game and said ND was legit that they started to play a different tune. It's simple.

Maybe you aren't being sensitive, but that's how it's coming across to me. What do you really expect out of Lou Holtz? He's admitted to being a homer ever since he left ND. The man and his wife will be buried in the cemetary at ND. Lou is fun to listen to, but even the most diehard Irish fans know when to "pass" on what he's saying.

ND is great! They have strengths that can exploit Alabama's weaknesses!
Alabama is susceptible to certain offensive schemes.
ND has a great defense, and should be able to give Alabama LOTS of trouble.
I hope ND players and coaches read and hear every glorifying word and go to bed with dreams of crystal trophies dancing in their heads.

Large fanbase? No doubt.

On ratings and ND pulling in the biggest...yes, the Irish have pulled in some good numbers this season. The highest game rated this year was ND vs USC, #2 behind UA vs UGA.

ND has one in the top five, UA three. ND four of the top 15, UA has the same number with four in the top 10.

UA and ND had four
Florida and LSU had three.
Michigan and Georgia had two.

That's not being sensitive. That's working in the industry and following numbers. :very_drunk:

Bama vs Georgia pulled a 9.8 if I recall correctly. That translates to just over 16MM homes.

I'm looking forward to seeing the numbers after the BCSNC. The overnight numbers will beat the 9.8. However, the quarterly numbers released in March are what I'm really interested in seeing. The overnight numbers are conservatively low.

Based on what you've shared here I can safely say you've got me in age by probably 20 yrs, give or take a few.

I say that, to say this. Being sensitive to what people say left my conscience long, long ago. Frankly, and I probably should say sadly, my being sensitive to others being sensitive to what I say left awhile ago as well. :biggrin_blue:
