I've heard this in more than one place, from more than one person, and while it's not getting on my nerves so to speak it certainly qualifies as...well, misguided. Yeah, we'll go with misguided.
"He's not Johnny Manziel but he's pretty darn close."
This has been stated more than just a few times from people trying to make a comparison between Golson and Manziel.
A&M has played three teams in the top ten in total defense. Notre Dame has played three teams in the top 20 in total defense. But for the sake of this discussion I'm going to set aside competition played against and just look purely at the numbers.
Golson:
2,135 yards passing,
11 TDs,
5 INTs,
305 yards rushing,
5 TDs.
Manziel:
3,419 yards,
24 TDs,
8 INTs,
1,181 yards rushing
19 TDs.
For those of you who are mathematically challenged, that's a difference of 2160 yards of total offense, and 27 TD's on the season.
Are they both dual threat quarterbacks? Yes.
Have they both improved throughout the season? Yes.
Are they both good quarterbacks? Yes.
Are they anywhere, in any shape or form, close to each other when it comes to production?
HELL NO!
Now, I realize it is probably tempting to think "Manziel and Golson can't be compared with rushing yardsāManziel runs more and Golson feeds their running backs."
That might work with me IF there wasn't less than 100 yards difference between what Riddick and Wood gained for Notre Dame and what A&M accumulated from their backfield this season.
That's all for now.
