🏈 The first of a few thoughts on LSU...

I don't want you to think this is meant as a disrespectful post towards John Chavis. I consider him to be one of the top defensive coordinators in college football.

But, that being said, this IS a John Chavis defense we'll be facing. What does that mean to me?

They will be playing fast and very aggressive. But, they'll temper that with playing a little undisciplined. Chavis, and his defenses, have always played that way dating back to his defenses in the late 90's during their title run.

What does that mean as far as we're concerned?

It's another game where—or make that when—they're "punched in the face" a few times and the emotions get the best of them...leading to mistakes on defense...

As of this minute, I'd probably take Bama -7. I'm also trying to talk myself out of believing we win by double digits.

I have watched nearly every LSU snap this season and I think three things are clear.
1. Their offense depends upon the big play and has not been forced to score (keep up) because the opponent executed and possessed the ball resulting in points.
2. Their DB's depend upon the QB being pressured. If you keep the QB upright (roll outs, shot gun) and are accurate with quick vertical throws (not sideline to sideline like Oregon) you will move it through the air.
3. They are too emotional. LSU has yet to play a team that responds to their own miscues by punching them in the mouth. In every game the opponent has panicked or gone real conservative after a mistake. What will happen when they get a sac and the other guys respond by not getting scared?
IMO they are good on paper but ripe for the picking and they will lose to us and Arky.

without putting much research in...aren't all the "big" games they have had this year against a more spread type offense? Auburn, Oregon, West Virginia....I'm not counting florida and tennessee because of the injuries they had.

So all of their toughtest opponents played to the LSU defense strengths. We will run it right at them not around them. which as Terry explained will further expose their undisciplined approach. It's not even worth comparing our defense to their other opponents.

I have that gut feeling we win by 2-3 TD's

What I can't figure is why folks are not giving A.J. any props at all. He's completed more passes for more yards with a higher completion percentage than Jarrett Lee. The kid knows what he's doing.

You are aware that LSU has run the ball for 50 more attempts than Bama this year? If you've watched every play then you should know LSU doesn't "depend" on the big play any more than Bama does. Both teams wear down their opponents in the second half with the run. Having the "big play" as an option can only help an offense already successful with the run, and if necessary, is in the arsenal to help come from behind.

You are correct--the "big" games were against the spread opponents. And injuries or not, they stuffed Florida and Tennessee after the first quarter. But the Tigers, like the Tide, are big and tough in the middle and have a lot of depth to rotate the DL. So you could also say that Bama hasn't run against a defense like LSU's.

Once again (and I'm already tiring of saying it...), IS NOVEMBER 5TH HERE YET!!!!

I keep asking myself "Who have they played that is like us". I don't have an answer. If true this would mean that all the stats are irrelevant in this case.

Where I gain comfort is concluding that our path to victory is by us doing what we do, being ourselves. Run the ball, eat up the clock, play sufficating defense...be Bama.

and who has Bama stopped from "being LSU". The only reason LSU is ahead of Bama in the BCS right now is Strength of Schedule, so spread or not, injuries or not, etc., both teams have done what they do to whomever faced them across the line of scrimmage.

The game will tell.

All good and valid points, however, if all a team can DO is throw the ball (WV), I'm sure Bama would do as LSU did. Run is stuffed completely, let 'em hurl it around 60 times, and INT's will follow. Worked, plus they only scored 21. Yes, Oregon scored 27, but anyone watching the game saw the difference between the teams.

LSU wouldn't play Bama like they played those spread teams, and vice versa. I can't argue that statistically (on D) Bama holds all the cards, but as someone said earlier, that ain't all that matters. LSU is close on several of those stats, but is better at turnover margin.

All I'm saying is it will be one hell of a game, and while we can pick apart the details til then (and dammit if we don't have anything better to do for the next 10 days!), I can't wait to see it play out in person. Until then, we :fight:
