Didn't Texas Tech run the spread back when we played them New Year's Day 2006? How were we so successful in defending then vs. the other night? What was Shula able to figure out that Saban wasn't?

To throw further questions out there how was Ole Miss able to successfully shut down Texas Tech's spread at this year's Cotton Bowl? Only Oklahoma was successful in doing that vs. Tech. How does a team like Ole Miss step in and handle it so well and we handle it so poorly?

I promise I'll try hard to let this all go soon...

The offense was a lot different than what Utah runs, and the players in the game were significantly different.

It didn't hurt that we had 5 NFL players starting on that defense, either.

i think utah caught alabama off-guard with a scripted no huddle offense..

probably the first 20 plays or so.. everyone knew what the next play was and they sprinted to the line...

that's alot faster than a no-huddle offense..

not always a great decision, but this time it worked..

as far as the 2005 team.. 2 words..

When TTU caught the ball, we tackled them before they reached the first down markers, for one.

Another area, and I'm still wondering why on earth we were giving them such a cushion off the line with our DB's, Kines used a lot of physical press coverage in that game.

Add to that, we did have a decent pass rush in that game.

Charlie Peprah, Anothony Madison

Ramzee Robinson, Wallace Gilberry...

Reamer started that game as well...

FWIW, we've got a few in the NFL from that team. LeRon, Brodie, Darby...

Got a few still on the team, Reamer, as I mentioned, McCall started that game as well as did Antoine. Glen saw some action in the game, Rashad, Bobby, Marlon are a few more that come to mind.

BINGO! On all account. But even with the scripted plays, I feel that WE had more to do with it that they did. If it was simply scripting, Utah would have done that against every team this season and started with 21 point leads every week. 21 points against our Defense points to our defense.

IMO Joe Kines defenses seemed to be really effective against spread type offenses (broad term I know). He seemed to prefer smaller/faster LB's. We seemed to stay in the 3-3-5 a lot that year.

very similar to the success of muschamp...

i think it is a philosophy very different from saban's.. the defense is more of a net than anything.. saban likes to attack.. i think that hurt him against florida.. ironically, he played backl against utah initially, but the speed of the game was the issue in the first quater.. our defense actually played very well for the remainder of the game..
