The word "favored" there is a misnomer. Semantics? Maybe. It's projected, certainly not favored, as Michigan is already giving 1.5 to 2.3 to Notre Dame to open the season.

That's not the half of it. This Football Power Index often gets a lot more sketchy than that during the season.
For example, Ohio State after the loss to Oklahoma at home and having to come from behind to beat Indiana the week before was sitting at 1-1. ESPN still had the Buckeyes at #1 in the FPI over Alabama and Clemson. You do remember that Clemson team had just completely dismantled OSU in the semi-playoff a few months before. At that point why would the FPI even have the Buckeyes ahead of Oklahoma who whupped them good in Columbus?
