🏈 Team Update 3 August, 2015.

uagrad93 , did Coker play backup to AJ at the same high school? Were they running wing-T with AJ? Interesting if the offense was changed when Jake came on the scene, or maybe either way.

The OC that AJ had at St Paul's took another job when AJ graduated. I believe a change happened at HC as well. The new guy brought in the Wing T. The Wing T, Wishbone, Split back veer, Spread option teams that rely on the ground game, don't develop their passing game or their QBs enough. Take the smash route for example. The outside receiver will run a short route ( speed out, hitch, stop) and the inside receiver will run a corner route. It puts the CB in a bind where he has to make a choice, stay up on the short route or bail on the deeper route. Coaches then tell the QB that whichever the CB takes, he is wrong and throw to the other guy. They don't teach coverages, like man, 2 deep, man free, 3 deep, etc.

I dunno man... If he couldn't pick up last year's offense, than he can't pick up any. Every pass play went like this:

1. Stand at the line and look at Kiffin

2. Let the receivers hussle to their position before the play clock runs out

3. Call hut

4. Throw to Cooper

5. Watch him run

I know it looked that simple but it is a lot more complex than that.

Interesting. Thanks for the insight.

You've got to be kidding.

Those guys were put at other positions because the staff didn't see a legit future at QB. Would you ever have seen GMAC or McCarron running routes in Spring practice? Of course not.

If Morris has a legit shot at starting, that makes the staff look even worse. Instead of our future starting QB throwing passes and getting live experience, he was practicing ball drops and ******* pooch punts.

The development of this upperclassmen group of QB's has been FUBAR'd. Hopefully one of these dudes can step up and make that position look respectable.

I still disagree with this. They knew Morris could punt. He did it in HS. they got him some reps, just in case. Bateman at WR.. if I remember correctly, they were short at WRs last year? Someone would have to confirm that...
I don't think Morris starting would make the staff look bad at all. Everyone knew that he's extremely football smart and knows the plays well for a while... Sometime it takes a while for them to start clicking well on the field.
I don't think the devleopment of the QBs is messed up... it's a hit and miss... Keep that in mind, we've had GMAc, McCarron, Sims... and they had good years at Alabama... Those back up QBs.. just had to wait... SO your theory has flaws in it...

The only reason I know this, is because I started in a run heavy offense in HS as a WR/TE. We ran routes for about two minutes and then blocked for 20 minutes. I then converted to a QB and our offense went Pro Style/ Spread (3-5 WR sets). I walked on and really learned how to read coverages from the best OC in Homer Smith. I then coached HS ball for 13 years and was coaching QBs in the Wing T and the Spread Option. I tried to teach coverages but was always overruled by the HC/OC. You can get a lot from watching alignment of safeties and corners in their pre snap sets.

All well and good but Coker has been in a pro style offense for 5 years now. He's a 5th year senior. It's time to stop making excuses from high school.

I'm not making excuses @Snout Spout. I'm calling it like it is! People question why he hasn't gotten it and here is the answer. I just know that it is more complex than just saying he is a 5th yr senior and should know it. This is his second offense. Terminology is different, numbering system, holes either numbered "odds left evens right" or vice versa.
This is why recruiting QBs is such a crapshoot. You go off of potential.

Update for today :

Nothing mind blowing

Hump and black still limited

Drake worked with recievers a good bit.

Coker made some nice long throws as well as Barnett. No pressure.

Like I had said before harrison and Fitzpatrick will play in some capacity.

Tony Brown and josh casher got alittle heated today. If you don't know brown has a bad temper.

Ardarius Stewart is looking really nice, ridley too.

Mtf. Scrimmage is the main event. Kiffin will figure out the top 2 for more reps.

@BW_Jones: Nick Saban says ArDarius Stewart has been the most consistent WR in practice. "He's the next guy we need to sort of be the man."

@AaronSuttles: Saban: We want more players to play like Jonathan Allen, who plays with tremendous discipline.

@AaronSuttles: Saban: Minkah Fitzpatrick has done a really really good job. He's a guy that could make a contribution this year. Ronnie Harrison too.

@AaronSuttles: Saban on Ridley having potential to be elite: Calvin Ridley has a lot of ability, but he hasn't even played a game yet.

@AaronSuttles: Saban: We have given all QBs a chance. We have to make a determination before the scrimmage about how many reps each player gets.

Good. So long as it doesn't translate to penalties on Saturday, I'm all for it. The defense needs a fire breathing, bad ass, on the verge of losing control to bring back the swagger it had with Ro, Hightower, and Upshaw. I think it can be channeled into a positive thing so long as it is placed against common task cohesion.

Was listening to Rick and Bubba sometime this week and Rick was discussing how many coaches he has talked to view practice fights as a good thing in team identity. He said it shows intensity in practice that translates to the games. Here's hoping he is right!

This defense has a serious chip and these outbreaks have been happening pretty frequent. I am excited to see where it goes.

The team has officially been in camp for a week today, as it took the field for the eighth practice of fall camp. I focused on one side of the field today. Here is what I saw.

The quarterbacks continue to throw in groups of two, with Jake Coker and Alec Morris in one group and David Cornwell, Cooper Bateman and Blake Barnett in the other. No one in the competition has particularly distinguished themselves. That said, a lot of anxious eyes are ready for this weekend's scrimmage.

With the wide receivers, Chris Black stood off to the side and watched on certain drills and then participated in others. The one drill I watched closely, the group worked in the following order: ArDarius Stewart/Robert Foster, Chris Black/Parker Barrineau, Richard Mullaney/Calvin Ridley, Deionte Thompson/Derek Kief.

A night after working some with the outside linebackers, senior Reggie Ragland was back with the inside backers Wednesday.

My esteemed colleague Ben Jones did some patrolling of the other side of the field and this is what he saw.

Looked at both groups of LBs today:

OLB were going through individual agility drills in the following order: Denzel Devall, Ryan Anderson, Rashaan Evans, Christian Miller, Jamey Mosley, Mekhi Brown, Joshua McMillon

ILB were working on some ball-stripping drills in this order: Reggie Ragland, Dillon Lee, Reuben Foster, Shaun Dion Hamilton, Keaton Anderson.

Kenyan Drake was working with WRs. Derrick Henry was still first through on RB drills, followed by Damien Harris.
