🏈 TE Coach.....

I think it is more the system, in this case. OJ only has 30 rec but he has only been targeted like 36 times, most of those after we lost Sims and before the light came on for ArDarius. I know, it was in one of the twp last games, they threw one to him and he dropped it, probably out of shock. He is being projected as a possible 2nd or 3rd rounder. Watch him turn into a por bowler at the next level.

OJ doesn't get open. If he has tight coverage, he doesn't fight for the ball. I'm not hating on him, but he has a lot of talent yet to be used. If he tries to go pro in 2016, I think it would be a mistake.

I think it's a domination of things:
Scheme
Practice habits
Not being the hot target based on coverage
Lack or unwillingness to be a consistent blocker which translates in him not being looked for by Coker

Just my opinion.

I think it is a combination of scheme and simply where the TE position falls in the progression. A QB has a pre snap read that will often determine whether his progression starts left or right. This may take Coker's eyes away from OJ before the ball is ever snapped. OJ may be the 2nd read in the progression also. The problem comes when the 1st option is wide ass open or his name is Calvin Ridley. QB coaches used to always preach softest corner, shortest throw when it came to curls, hitches, or out routes.

True, but he has been getting more targets than he had over last couple years with almost double his receptions per game from the first 2 years.

That said, it doesn't help that he is not the most sure handed catching TE when he gets his opportunities either.

In all, I'm most surprised that he hasn't developed into a red zone threat given his size and skillset.

Wasn't it @ Ole Piss in '09 when we targeted Julio on about 4-5 fades inside the red zone, with a couple of near ints? Julio had a pretty good skill set as well. I think a lot comes down to Saban and HIS offensive philosophy too. He was willing to try it and when it didn't produce, he axed that shit! Don't get me wrong, as a former QB, I love the idea of having a big target down in the red zone.

Maybe, but keeping it more apples to apples as UA still throws the WR fade... it just seems that guys like Walker, Peek, Williams, Dial (to an extent) were a bigger part of the scoring offense. That may just be my memory conflated with unrealized expectations I held for Howard (the best on paper receiving threat of them all). Other than your asessment, which I think is spot on and his drops, I'm just unsure why he isn't used more in the RZ.

It probably boils down to a confidence thing that Coker has or doesn't have with OJ. Like you said not the best hands at times.

JMO...I respect OJH and appreciate his willingness to play for Alabama, having said that I think he lacks the "mean streak" that some of the better TEs have. TE is a blue collar position and the really good TEs seem to have a bit of an attitude, almost confrontational, that Howard seems to lack. I also think it is just the offensive scheme to some extent that may limit him. As I said at the outset, just my opinion.

I officially dont get it... I said before the season that OJ's biggest problem was his lack of blocking ability. I know some people on here still make the "OJ sucks as a blocker" comment but thats just flat out not true anymore. He has improved 200% as a blocker and sealed the edge more than a few times for Henry. The guy is just simply not targeted. As good as Kiffin is at finding ways to use largely athletic players, its a freakin crime that he hasnt done a better job with OJ. You can probably count on one hand how many seam routes OJ has run or even that little bootleg with OJ trailing underneath. I think they have run that twice all year and one of them went for nearly 40 yards. I just dont get it. Everytime I see OJ line up in the slot or outside I'm thinking maybe they are actually going to do something with him and then they throw a screen or a jet sweep.
