Swinney on leaving Clemson for Alabama: 'You don't ever say never'

Judging by all the winning and dancing that’s been going on at Clemson this season, it looks like Tigers’ head coach Dabo Swinney is pretty happy where he is right now. But that doesn’t necessarily mean he will spend the rest of his coaching career at Clemson.

In a recent interview with CBS Sports’ Jon Solomon, Swinney was asked hypothetically if he would consider coaching at his alma matter Alabama, where he played wide receiver and spent seven years as an assistant coach.

Per CBS Sports:

ā€œYou don't ever say never. You don't ever know what the circumstances would be at any given time. First of all, Alabama may never, ever call me and I would never have a problem with that. They've got to do what they've got to do. My deal is to be great where I'm at. I had opportunities to leave Alabama. I had opportunities to leave Clemson. But I've just never been that guy about the next job. I'm about the job I've got.ā€

So far this season Swinney has guided the Tigers (10-0, 7-0 ACC) to a No. 1 ranking in all three polls 10-0 (7-0) and an ACC Atlantic Division title.

Clemson will be back in action this Saturday when it hosts Wake Forest (3-7, 1-5) at 3:30 p.m. (EST).

Alabama (9-1), the No. 2 ranked team in the College Football Playoff Poll, will host Charleston Southern (9-1) at 4 p.m.

He's been a pretty good coach for a school that doesn't have the resources that Bama has. HIs recruiting classes are usually in the 20-25 ranking, if I remember correctly and of his last 3.5 seasons (going back to start of 2012 season) he's lost 7 games, 6 to top 13 teams. The other was a top 25 team. Not too shabby, but understanding they play in the ACC.

Clemson was in the $80MM football budget range last year and I think projected about $90MM this year, so they are well below us and a bunch of other SEC schools (including South Carolina). I think ole Dabo has done pretty well there. I sure like his enthusiasm and fire. But I know not everyone does.

Side note, we've lost 6 games during the same span, all to top 15 teams. Of course, out strength of schedule has been tougher with more ranked teams each season.

Don't care. Do not want.

The reason the term "clemsonsing" exists is because of his coaching style. Relies on emotion and rah rah. Prone of disaster when the emotion gets knocked out of a team. Exact opposite of Saban.

I like Dabo and wish him the best.. I'm definitely rooting for him (unless it comes down to Clemson v. Bama of course). He has a lot of Bama pride in him and I know it is probably his dream job to coach at Bama.

With that said, I don't think he would do very well in the long run if he came in right behind Saban.... you never want to be the guy behind the guy... you want to be the guy behind the guy that was the guy behind the guy. His style is too polar opposite of Saban. While the talent alone at Bama would be enough to net even the worst of coaches some immediate success, I think it would take another business like approach guy to sustain the success after the Saban era recruits are gone.

If that doesn't work though, bring on Dabo. He's proving himself a worthy coach with strong ties to Bama. It's not like bringing Shula in for his first HC gig.

I agree with what others have said. I think he is a guy who has a good team when he gets them up on emotion, but I don't think he can do it consistently. I also agree that he is very opposite of Saban, and if he were hired to follow Saban, it would be a big swing for Alabama. I'd rather hire Smart than Dabo, at least at this point.

Lord I hope we don't take him. I want a personality that let's his team's actions on the field speak for him. I get tired of Yabo Dabo continuously running off a few recent statistics and a couple of wins against down teams to try and build confidence in the country that Clemson is great. It comes across as a cocky I don't want when there is nothing really to show for it. I don't like the guy, regardless if he played for us. And if you ask me, Spurrier always had his number on the field and in the comments department.

I'm saying I'm for him or again' him. I just think he's done a pretty darn good job at Clemson, given all factors, even before their #1 ranking this year. Their program has gained some respect in his 7 years at the helm. Guess it doesn't really matter who I want anyway. Smart could be a good choice, I'm not sure. Kiffin, naaaaah.... Gruden, Lol. His name would certainly come up as it does in every vacancy... At this point I prefer Saban hang around another 10 years and win another 4 titles. I don't know anyone else I would want to coach our team.

Noooooooooooopee. Total tool.

This isn't just pointed at you bammerboy but also a few others that posted in this thread too.

Dabo is a good friend, a great man, a great football coach and the example of what you want a student athlete to be like. He was Gene Stallings favorite player he ever coached. He was a walk on who earned his way on the field to get a scholarship and a leader of our program.

I grew up about a 15 houses down from him and dated my next door neighbor. I went to high school with the guy and he was always one of the kindest, coolest guys you could be around.

Now I don't know that he is what I would want as a head coach at Alabama, although he is capable of doing a great job and he knows the lay of the land.

That being said those of you calling him a tool or attacking his character.. Couldn't be further off base if you tried. He is a great guy and you would be lucky to have a friend as true blue as him. So say you don't want him or that he is a bad dancer or anything else you want but he was a model student athlete and coach here and is a super cool guy to know.

Roll tide

Come on he could be the second "Mama called and I came running" He has not been at Clemson very long and has made a tremendous impact on that program. We don't know enough to judge him in the future or we all would be rich bitches. I have learned to trust some of the posters here but don't listen to all of them. All of us have our opinions and reading the ones that have posted does not change mine. His record will determine whether he becomes a viable candidate for a future dance with BAMA. He is dancing just fine where he is right now.
