Apparently it is addictive too. Is it me or has using the phrase "Drinking the Kool-Aid" just exploded into everyday language in that last year or so? I has come on like the latest fad...and yet Coach Lou even uses it (scary for Lou to be "with it").

Saban did not coin it, it dates to a 1987 article about Marion Barry in the Washington Post.

There was a black guy who called into Sean Hannity's radio program, protesting his use of the phrase. The guy said it was racist. 'Course, Sean (and 9,000,000 other people) think of the Jonestown tragedy, but a guy I work with said that the dude probably thought it was racist because blacks drink more Kool-Aid than anyone. I don't know how true that is, but I still think it has to do with Jonestown.

There is no doubt that Jonestown is the origin. Anyone who says otherwise is simply ignorant. Of course, it was recently proposed that the usage of the term "Black Hole" as a negative reference - is racist.

Thank you! While I had heard of the Jonestown Massacre, I had never realized that the saying was referring to that. In fact, I was joking with some friends the other day and "drink the kool-aid" came up. My girlfriend asked me where the expression came from and I couldn't tell her.

It doesn't matter what the origin is...because we all know what Saban means when he's saying it. It's just about the team and expectations.

First it was "we must focus only on the next game...even as fans we should never talk about anything but the next game."

Now it is:

"we must not allow our IQ to get higher. We must not pursue intellectual growth at the expense of focus."
