Spurrier discussed Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump and Nick Saban in the same answer.
It wouldn't be an SEC Media Days without a littleSteve Spurrier.
And the South Carolina head coach found a way to reference Nick Saban again kicking off Tuesday's festivities in Hoover. The two have somewhat of a history in sound bites and Spurrier offered another this year.
Answering a question about how much longer the 70-year old coach planned to work, Spurrier made a few celebrity references. After mentioning Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were both running for president at 69 (though Clinton is 67), Spurrier spoke about the general uncertainty of coaching year to year.
That's where Saban factored in.
"We've got some coaches in our league that may go to the NFL teams that can offer $15 million, $20 million a year to a coach," Spurrier said. "If one of them offered coach Saban, it would make that $7.2 million look paltry to him probably, and they easily could."
Saban's contract pays him $6.9 million a year.
And in terms of NFL coaching salaries, Sean Payton is the highest-paid. He reportedly make $8 million a year, less than half of the midpoint of Spurrier's projection.
Both Spurrier and Saban made the jump from college coaching to the NFL, but both returned after two seasons. Spurrier left Florida for Washington in 2001 and Saban went from LSU to the Dolphins in 2006, but both returned to the SEC to find more success than in the pros.
A year ago, Spurrier had a few things to say about Saban. In June, he told the State newspaper in South Carolina that Saban had "maxed out" his potential at Alabama. By 2014 SEC Media Days, Spurrier softened that stance by saying Saban was the best recruiter in the history of college football.
