šŸ“” Staff additions/changes: Reports: Craig Kuligowski hired as defensive line coach

I’m beginning to think that some fans would argue Jalen over any QB in the history of Alabama football if they were on the same team...

Certainly unprecedented in Bama QB history. Came within ~2min of leading us to title as a freshman even though some would have still said it was in spite of him. Played well enough early vs inferior comp to keep the haters away, but once again struggled down the stretch against elite defenses. I guess it's somewhat reasonable for Hurts supporters to say that Tua's performance was lightening in a bottle and Jalen is still in the mix. Most of the regulars here know how I've been team Tua (50% of the time was mostly to start schitt), but I'm now fascinated by anyone who still thinks Hurts could possibly win the job.

Bottom line, Jalen will go down as one of the (my) favorite players to ever wear Crimson. Some kids you just can't help but root for and Jalen is one of the favorites of Saban era. People keep expecting him to not be real (this classy of a kid), but it appears that he is as good as he

The QB position is such a lightning rod for commentary.

Don Jacobs - great QB who helped us mightily - but that fumble against Miss St.
Walter Lewis - his gamesmanship and offensive production kept Coach Bryant's late years' decline less evident.
Shula - what a competitor, he got the most out of his ability. Many folks have a tendency to paint his playing years with his coaching record. I don't.
Vince Sutton - he was here forever, and stepped in before and after Shula. I watched his comeback against Kentucky at Commonwealth stadium. Unlikely.
Jay Barker - won the NC, but what a horrible line against Miami. His better games were to come.
John David Phillips/Zow/Watts - What a progression. Zow held the all-time passing mark for years, still one of the few non-Saban QBs to make the top 10.
Freddie - what a gamer, I haven't followed his coaching career lately, but he's in the league somewhere.
Croyle - so fragile, but so talented. During this off-season, go find one of his Bama games on youtube and watch it to marvel at his arm.
JPW - not afraid to sling it, bad TO against LSU but gave us the blackout against UGA, showcasing a previously unknown ability for the touch pass and bringing a young Julio into the spotlight. His ability to linger in the league is a testament to his ability.

I won't continue further into the Saban era, but we (me included) have a tendency to sum a QB into a single game or even a defining play. I think it makes a nice, neat package for our memories, but it sells them short. The only position that gets more disdain is the kicker.

RTR,

Tim

Put him in a real Alabama shirt, I'm not a fan of photoshopping the photo

Jalen could stay at Bama for 10 years and he will still be stuck where he is today as far as a QB. #2 lacks the confidence to be elite as a passer and that will not change. It is just part of his mental makeup. He is great at what he does well. I hope he stays and continues to be a QB. You need a solid backup and another solid backup behind him.

Dead on. Jalen has reached his ceiling. He can't read defenses fast enough to recognize different pass coverages, stunts and blitzes. It is what it is. Tua is a generational type QB. He'll get more reps with the 1's and it will show what a difference that makes.

Ya know, I don't know if we can say "he's reached his ceiling." I've thought that about many a QB in my day and found out differently. Horribly analogy considering the team ... but, gotta ask. Before Jason Campbell's last season at QB (under Borges) did you have reason to think he'd finish out his career the way he was able to on the Plains? I did not.

I'm not disagreeing with you, or anyone, when it comes to his difficulties reading defenses. I'll add one of the biggest difficulties I've seen isn't mentioned. I've noticed he does a pretty good job of reading RPO calls as long as it's at the line of scrimmage, pre-snap. Once that ball is snapped he sure seems to do the same thing, every time. As soon as the decision has to be made he's bailing right getting out of the pocket.

With all the benefits and accolades that come with the QB position at Bama I'm so far from being envious of Jalen it's almost reached a degree of empathy. I can't imagine what he's thinking and feeling about what his football future holds.

He does have way more problems once the ball is snapped. He doesn't throw a WR open. He tries to wait till they come open. I think he got gun shy. He had 9 Int's his 1st year. He also had 11 fumbles and lost 5. He has gotten mental about the whole position and that is worse than anything. Now, he has an elite Qb that he has to deal with and Tua has all the tools. I feel for him, but he was almost 0-2 in NC games.
