Spring Practice: Reviewing the Offense - First Ten of 2009

By Terry Pellman

After following several decades of spring camp at Alabama I’ve been shocked very few times.

This spring very well may make the one of the largest shocks I’ve experienced considering the pre-conceptions I had going in to the first practice close to three weeks ago. Some of the news has been expected, some of it - well - dull, if it’s possible news about football could be described in such a manner.

I fully expected the battle for the starting role at Quarterback to be one we really didn’t have a clear cut answer for until we found ourselves emerged in fall practice. But, evidenced by Coach Saban’s remarks during his press conference last week this anticipated battle may not even qualify as a skirmish.

Thanks for the writeup. To me, the only surprising thing about the qb "battle" is the fact that people are surprised that McElroy is the clear leader. There was never one second where I thought anyone else had a chance to start ahead of him. It blows my mind that we can have a qb as talented as GMac and people have no idea (I don't mean you). I understand though that no one has seen him on the field, so how should people know. The guy can play and has all the tools you want from a qb. Star on the other hand... everything I've heard is that he has the ability he's just taking a long time to develop. At the elite 11 camp, they stated he was AT LEAST 2 years away from being able to compete in the SEC. I think they were right, although I do think when it clicks, he's going to be an incredible player.

So far the only surprise to me has been that Barron may not start. There could be some surprises on the offensive line, but I've reserved forming any opinions on how that would pan out, so nothing can really surprise me there. I don't want to think about it too much until Fluker gets on campus. It will only take one player added to completely change up the line.

I should have been more specific...and I'm glad you pointed that out.

It isn't so much a shock that he's in front, it's the separation between the two.

Now that I can agree with. I thought we'd begin hearing more and more about Star looking good at practice and how's he's on Greg's heels. I always figured GM would start, but I'm with you in thinking there would have been more competition. Instead I keep getting mixed feedback. Sometimes it's Star is getting better and sometimes it's Star is looking lost. I've never heard anything but positives about McElroy and that he has really thrown himself into the driver's seat... Watching film, studying the playbook and working out constantly.

Once again, thanks for the write up and the info.

Forgot to mention something else I've been surprised by. Robbie Green! I never would have imagined him making such a splash so fast. Kinda figure we'd have to wait for him to bulk up, but he's really been impressing the staff and has shown that he can tackle pretty good for his size.

Funny you should mention him.

I'm working on the defensive review right now and am going to get in to that a little bit.

Odds that people will say "what about his size?"
