🏈 Spring Practice, 2018: Looking to A-day... (Update: Tua with 2nd surgery on hand.)

I can't recall ever seeing a kid interview with the press who wasn't in a starting role. Understand, by "starting role" I'm referring to guys who will contribute a lot. After all, if we got down to the brass tacks of the matter, we could probably label 30 or more as starters depending on sets and personnel groupings used to start a game.

The first time I noticed the pattern was back in '09 with guys like Colin Peek. Saban's has been consistent on that front from my observations.

I fully agree that those who are interviewed are those that will contribute (not too many walkons being interviewed). I'm just saying that if Jalen/Tua is the first person to show up for the press, don't assume that he's the starter.

I almost added that as a caveat but didn't consider it necessary especially considering we saw Tua with the press more than we've seen any other frosh.

As example ... if we're seeing Savion Smith speaking to the media I'd bet he's locking down a starting spot. I'd say it's the same with any of the defensive backs. I'd also say that about guys we might see in the WR rotation.

The biggest misconception I see happening this spring is happening with those who thing spring camp is going to decide which QB starts. Don't get me wrong. I haven't been spending time sending notes and making calls as to their progress. I have had a few conversations with friends about what's going on and to a man they all are saying the same thing: this spring is going to be used for development of all three. When asked to go into more detail, they believe the reps are going to be divided among all three, somewhat equally.

I would only add to this that the coaches are also happy at times to slow play the situation. By not settling the issue until the season begins it obligates all involved. Unless you follow the Barnett plan of the exodus out of Tuscaloosa.

You have to remember Saban's freshman rule - they don't speak with the media. Tua only had press time when the conference mandated it in the postseason. Jalen didn't have press time in his freshman year, either, until the postseason.

For post practice interviews, that's correct. Tua spoke with the media before spring camp of '17. He was interviewed following NSD of '17 by quite a few of the press. It was the earliest a frosh has spoken with the media in Saban's tenure here.

That's because he was an early enrollee and freshman early enrollees don't get the media coverage of signing day at their high school. Blake Barnett met with the media on NSD in 2015.

Oh noes...

Remember when Kurt Warner broke his thumb and had to wear gloves post-surgery because he had trouble gripping the ball bare-handed because of said thumb injury?

Tua gonna need some gloves...

Tua out for spring with apparent broken thumb (throwing hand). That f’ng injury bug still lingers in Tuscaloosa.

PS-ECU transfer QB going to Washington St. instead of Bama now.

After listening to Saban PC, he sounded as if Tua injury may not be all spring. I guess we will find out soon enough.
