🏈 Special Teams????

good punt coverage, good kickoff coverage, good punt returns for the most part. our struggles came with their short kickoffs (trying to keep Julio & Javy away from the ball) really only on the 2nd kickoff when whoever it was that should've stayed and catch the kick instead of Julio trying to spring 20-30 yards to try and get it didnt. that was obviously a brain fart. then the onside kick that i said "watch the onside" right before it happened. shoulda been more aware of that possibility. i still dont know why we didnt move Javy & Julio up to around the 30 yard line and drop Maze and Richardson (or some other combo) back at the goal line in case they kicked it deep when those two moved up.

I was saying the same thing. My buddy would turn his head everytime they kicked off to us because he knew the onside was coming and we wouldn't be ready. And about moving julio and javy, I had a similar scenario in my head. I was thinking the same thing but reverse. Leave Javi and Julio and put Maze where Williams kept fielding the kicks and opposite side for Trent. Oh well.

Texas made it a point to pick on our return teams. It seems like everyone in the stadium got that message except our players and special teams coaches. I've been saying for a couple of seasons that the special teams need a drastic makeover.

Even my 12 year old said before the on-side kick that it was coming. I never commented because I knew he was probably right and that we'd not recover it. Not that I have the ability to see into the future or anything, but I think most people saw this one coming before it happened. Texas coaches did a nice job of trying to pinpoint and exploit our weaknesses, and I feel like our coaches on special teams had no answer whatsoever. Again.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot.....was that kick that hit Smelly ( I think Smelly ) planned as an on side ? It just looked like he tried to knock the crap out of it and keep it low...and it just hit our guy by accident....even the Texas players looked as if they were expecting it to go on down the field. If he intended on hitting our player and that was planned....that was the most amazing play on special teams I have ever seen.

That was completely planned, he was aiming for Smelley. Something like that wouldn't work if you were anticipating an onside kick, which we should've been.

Amen!!! How many times has a team successfully completed an onsides kick against us this year alone? How many times have we put two guys on a gunner and he still almost beats Javy to the ball? There needs to be a shakeup.

You know...right before that on-sides kick I was thinking "man...it would really suck if they on-side kicked it like Auburn." As soon as he started running to kick the ball I knew it was going to happen.

I have to give the kickoff return team a grade of F but overall the special teams play had a C-. Tiffin missed an extra point. The long, 52 yard field goal is understandable to miss. Punt coverage and return was average, nothing speical. Like I said, overall grade for speical teams, C-. :dazed:
