šŸ“” SOURCE: Ed Orgeron and LSU have agreed to a 6-year contract extension valued at more than $42 million in total…

it always blows my mind how coaches get contract extensions after one good season. yes, they won the national championship. but i say hold off until the next season to see if it can be duplicated. and i'm not talking winning the national championship either; just having a good season 10-2/11-1 and maybe winning the conference. THEN i'd talk about an extension...and then only for 2-3 years or so. these longer extensions can come back to bite them in the ass if things don't go as planned (looking at you, auburn). then, the school is most likely on the hook for paying money to a coach that's not coaching there...AND...paying money to hire another coach (again, looking at you, auburn).

if he can sustain that winning, then good for him and he'll deserve it. but if not...

In a situation like this, I agree with you. You have to look at it from the perspective of "where is he going to go to" or "who is going to steal him". At the highest level, I don't think programs have to worry as much about other schools poaching from you. Who is seriously going to come to Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Auburn, Florida, and Clemson and steal your coach? Alabama folks were worried about Texas just because of money, but I don't think top level schools are really a threat to lose their coaches to another top level school, and they dang sure aren't willingly going down to a lower tier school. So I agree, why extend for so long when you don't have any bigger fish to worry about? All of this being said, the NFL is a different story and coaches will leave to go there, but they will not be like NFL players and sit out till they get their money as a coach.

Yeah.....I remember them extending DuBose contract one year and firing him the next....same with Chizit at AU ( couple years later)...
Give em a big bonus...and if success is continued...then restructure contract....
Those buyouts...yuck...

YES! bonuses are good. it's an appreciation for a well-done job. it shows that they appreciate what you just accomplished. and it also says if you can keep it up, then we'll show our appreciation even more with more bonuses and a better/extended contract.

what they're doing is almost rewarding them before they do the job.

Did the exact same thing with Shula. There wasn't anybody on planet earth looking into hiring him after the 2005 season, but we coughed up more money, like people were beating the door down to snatch him up. I would say the dumbest move ever made, but this the same University that let Bill Battle negotiate a Nike contract. Also the same university that had Bobby Bowden in their back pocket, but wanted to interview a man that had proven he could coach...............I digress.

As usual, it depends. Texas A&M "stole" Jimbo by offering him a longer term-guaranteed (we can debate if Jimbo had FSU where they needed to be later). If a coach gets fired and goes to a lower tier school, they still get the same money, it just comes in two checks - one from the new school, the balance from the old school (and yes, they won't quit the higher tier school to go to a lower tier school). It doesn't mean they'll stay at the lower school. The biggest threat for the highly paid coach schools is the NFL, but not all NFL teams. Dallas stands out as a team that overpays for performance.

All true...but Shulas pay on original contract was low....very low....
Boosted him way beyond his value though.....
Hated it for Shula.....
