⚾ 🥎 🥎 Alabama @ #5 Texas A&M - Tide drops series 2-1

Figured I’d drop this in this thread…..

Hate Tennessee but Karlyn Pickens…. Damn!!

Had this game on TV last night, but it was mostly background noise, I was far from glued to it. But the PA announcer made the announcement about he having the fastest recorded pitch right at the end of the game... that caught my attention. There's something in the water in Knoxville for the softball and baseball teams... maybe a little gasoline. Because they've got players that throw it.

I’m in NW Florida. I have a niece that played in South Georgia. Next time I talk to her I’ll ask her.
we’re in northwest Florida this week. 3 Wisconsin soccer players are camped beside us on the beach at the moment. #13 and #33. Can’t see the number on the backpack of the third girl. Girls are in shape…

But back to the reason of my thread hack, there’s Wisconsin and Minnesota people everywhere. The whole drive down, every other car. And we’re in a small housing thing here, about 15 houses, 8 are taken by folks from those 2 states. Got to be a minimum of 15 hours drive, probably a good bit longer for some.

Spring break it is. These cheese heads are all here for vacay. One family told us it’s a straight shot, 17 hours for them, when I asked why so many Wisconsin folks. I was thinking of a lot of straight shots that were closer than that. But these Badger soccer players, they can visit any time they want. One has a damn 8-pack.

Mike Boyd…I know of him but I don’t really know him. And my daughter is an above average softball player. Lol

Love it. I'm sure she cake rake. Mike coaches a really good team and he tells me a lot of these girls fly across the country to play on some of these teams. Not just regionalized, but nationally. That's still crazy to me, but apparently one of his teams is extremely good. My son and daughter started with him in the Fall. He's a big Alabama guy too.

We live in Georgia but my daughter plays for a team out of Orange Beach. A good 6 hour drive for practice! Her team has kids from 6 different states right now.

I always thought baseball was a different level, but softball takes the cake. this athletic facility we are building is going to have a baseball/softball focus with softball getting more of the planning than baseball just with how crazy softball is with practicing and hitting and the lengths at which these teams go through to prepare.

That’s wild! I had an acquaintance in Charlotte that’s son played on a travel hockey team out of Raleigh. He lived south of Charlotte, 2.5 hour commute one way to practice. And they practiced 4 evenings per week. Luckily there was another local kid on the team so they swapped driving every other practice. Said his son’s goalie gear cost around $15k. Games were in NY, Michigan, Minnesota and Illinois mostly, some out in the northwest also. Said he spent over $75k one year on that hockey league including travel. I asked him why he spent and sacrificed so much, he said they hoped the son got a scholarship to play college. Also admitted he didn’t have the size to ever make the NHL. I told him he will have paid for undergrad, graduate degrees and a PhD by the time his son graduates high school. Just being sarcastic, and he agreed. But it was good bonding time for their family and kept him and his son close.

I always wondered how folks afforded that kind of life. There are so many that do this too, and they start at ten years old.
