| BSB/SB So why doesn't Alabama have a lottery that can be used to support education/sports?

I remember reading about it being up for a vote and I'm guessing it was defeated?

I know MS doesn't have one, but they do seem to field a pretty good baseball team at times. Where's the difference there?

Tennessee doesn't have a lottery. They aren't good in baseball. Vanderbilt?

Tennessee does have a lottery

The closest we came was back when Don Singleterm was in office. (BTW he is in prison)
It was put to a vote and I think could have passed, but it was pretty crooked the amount of croanies he had with their hands in the kiddie. Had he done it semi-right on the up and up, I think we could have got it to go through.

I agree with Joe. The "do gooders " came out of the woodwork and voted it down the only time I remember it voted on. I also think that Mississippi has a lottery, (gambling), in which the proceeds may go into the general fund, not earmarked.

So that we can get in and out of the gas station in a reasonable amount of time.
@rammerjammer @It Takes Eleven Here's one of my random life observations ...

We've got the lottery here, scratch off cards and all. It doesn't affect getting gas—pay at the pump.
It does slow service down inside a bit when the Lotto is in that 160 million range and everyone wants their shot BUT stores are prepared for that influx of traffic.

Why do people complain about it slowing down the line? Jealousy. The lines are slowed down when they are cashing out the winners ... gotta have an bearing on how people feel.

money generated isn't expected to go where it's supposed to.

The Christian community was up in arms over the lottery in the last vote

It was my understanding there wasn't a definitive plan set for where the money would have been spent. IF there had been plans on its allocation, it would have passed.

Well, if you don't like the lifestyle of the majority you live around, move to an area where there are more that live life like yourself. It's as simple as that and your fault basically.

I personally don't mind a lottery. I gamble a good bit, but very rarely play the lottery. Go to the casino once a month, but played the lottery maybe 20 times in the last 14 years. With a state with such horrible academics for children, I think a lottery system should be implemented to help the kids, but like some are saying, sending it to the pockets of government officials and what not is bullshit.

Tennessee does have the lottery. Maybe it would help states like Alabama to provide money for some of the males in minor sports; maybe it wouldn't. They call the awarded scholarship money "the lottery" in Tennessee. Thinking of Vandy though, the remaining tuition and whatnot is several tens of thousands of dollars. "The lottery" scholarship pays maybe $1500. It's a drop in the bucket.

The lottery is a shell game of sorts, inherent to gambling I guess. Officials spend lots and lots of money on advertising and administration. Many students lose the scholarship early on due to grades ( I think you have to maintain a 3.0 ). I don't think any baseball player chooses to stay in Tennessee and play for the viles because they got the lottery. If so, look how well it worked out for tennersee. They put a terrible product on the field.

If it's similar to Georgia, yes, maintain a 3.0. Of course they ha e had to amend it lately due to the number of kids staying in state due to the HOPE scholarship. Like a 4.0 pays 100%, 3.5 pays 80%, 3.0 pays 75% type deal. But a 3.0 in college to maintain, checked every thirty hours if I remember correctly.

Just because a particular group has a plurality viewpoint, it doesn't mean that said group represents the majority viewpoint. Further, the argument of effectively, "if you don't like it go move somewhere else" can apply in reciprocation: If you don't like the idea of a lottery, then you can simply choose to not don't play it. And then your kids don't qualify for scholarships. Meanwhile, those that see the benefits and choose to participate should be able to do so.

As Voltaire said, "Grow your own garden."

Well a majority of the vote is going to get the ideals they want, or atleast that would be the idea. I agree, don't play if you don't want, but instead of belittling others, go where there are others with your viewpoints. Unfortunately in today's society there is too much vitriol against those that do not think 100% alike, and therefor it comes to making fun or saying inappropriate things. That's all I was saying, instead of making fun of someone's beliefs and trying to act like they're in the wrong, just move about your business or go somewhere where the laws of the land are in line with your beliefs.

The old gray hairs in the churches didn't want it and they came out in droves. The other issue like @TerryP said, they had no real set idea as to what the money would be used for. It is bad enough that the state can't manage their budget, but they can go to digging into the Education Fund and take money out and then in turn cut money from schools and cut programs out all together.

Agree that money going into politicians (or those that bribe them) pockets is bullshit but regardless it is beyond stupid to not have a lottery simply because many christians feel it isnt "moral." The same ppl that voted in a adulterating jackass as governor. In a perfect world the money WOULD be spent on education and maybe even we got some people in office that aren't corrupt or stupid we might be able to pull off something like that because Im 100% sure that there are more people in this state that would support having than not. But our state will just keep voting for whoever has an (R) beside their name regardless of anything else... And people will continue to go to Florida and Georgia to spend their money on the lottery, because giving to other states is whats best for our state right?

That's exactly what happens in our county, Lawrence, one of the poorest in the state, when a Wet / Dry issue or any progressive idea comes before us to vote on. I'm a Southern Baptist and a few years ago my pastor saw a Tennessee lottery ticket on the dash of my truck. He asked me,"What are you doing buying a lottery ticket?" Being the smartass that I am I replied, "trying to win 60 million dollars." He just shook his head and walked on. I asked him later did he think the deacons would turn down a tithe off of 60 million dollars and he grinned and said "No, I'm sure they wouldn't."
