I never watched the 61 defense.....but certainly watched the 92 defense. I do feel like its comparing apples to oranges though.....but...that being said......if the 92 defense had been on the field last night against that LSU team.....LSU would have done alot better IMO. The size, speed, DEPTH, and complexity of this defense sets it above all others IMO.
I don't know where, but it is one that other defenses (and I think other teams defenses too) will be compared to for a while. Pitching a shutout in the championship game was down right nasty.
This defense will be a measuring stick for many defenses to come for a long time. I wasn't alive in the 60's. Football today is not the same as football back then, or even 20 years ago. I would have to say this is the best defense I've ever seen and quite possibly the best ever when taking into consideration how the sport, and players, have evolved over decades.
They Played a perfect game against the a very very good team in a championship game. I remember 79 and 92 having to have heroic plays to win. But this team just dominated. LSU was putting lots of points on everybody. Scored Just 9 points in 9 quarters on Bama. Some of the defenses in the 60s did not let some teams past the 50. But this Defense is special. It is really telling that they did not win a single national award. Public Opinion really can suck. Roll Tide Rollll
I would have to put it at the top. Based on the development of the offenses and rules being changed to more or less help offenses, this bunch was downright nasty!!
One thing to take into consideration when you look at the 1961 defense is there were four teams on that schedule with winning records; Georgia Tech at 7-4 and then we faced an 8-3 Arkansas team in the Sugar Bowl.
On the other hand, this year we're looking at four SEC teams with records under .500 on our schedule.
Based on records of opponents, hands down this one is the best.
'92 benefitted from Miami being stupid enough to try to throw against us. There was not George Teague pick 6, but then again we did not need a George Teague to chase down an LSU WR to save a certain score.
I was there in '92. I have to give the nod to '11. IMHO
