Working on the 2009 Recruiting Class
With the ink barely dry from the names on the commitment list Nick Saban and company have wasted little time in preparing for the 2009 recruiting run. Fact is, the preparation has been ongoing all year and if anything, it's only been ramped up since the recruiting season began. The recruiting machine that he is, Saban is always looking ahead to solidify the next year's class by building the relationships necessary to recruit successfully in the Southeastern Conference. Just earlier this week we saw the Tide coaching staff host a Junior Day which attracted many of the top high school juniors from around the Southeast. Couple that along with how Saban has re-opened the recruiting doors in a fertile Mobile and flipped seemingly solid prospects that were committed to other schools and one can see Saban's plan for dominance. Get out early and get out often. Forge relationships with the underclassmen, their coaches, families, schools, and in some cases, even their friends.
With that said, let's take a look at some of the names BAMA fans might expect to see during recruiting season next year. And with a little luck, you may see many of these names going with the Tide on signing day.
DEFENSIVE LINEMEN/LINEBACKERS
DL D.J. Fluker
Believe it or not Alabama has a commitment as we speak. With all the hoopla surrounding the 2008 recruiting class you may have forgotten about D.J. Fluker out of Foley High School. Fluker was so impressed with Saban that he gave his verbal commitment back in November. The mammoth lineman stands over 6'6 and weighs over 325 pounds and is just the kind of run-stuffing interior defender Saban covets in his 3-4 scheme. While the good news is that he's committed, the bad news is that he's being pursued by the likes of LSU, Auburn, Florida, and Clemson to name a few. Expect things to get hotter between today and next year's signing day. Fluker finished his junior year racking up almost 80 tackles to go along with 7 sacks.
DL Chris Davenport
Davenport (6'4, 320) from Mansfield, Louisiana is quickly positioning himself as one of the best defensive tackles available in 2009. His junior numbers included 120 tackles and 18 sacks. LSU looks to be the early leader though BAMA is also expected to be in the mix. Other schools interested include Ole Miss, Boston College, and Minnesota.
DL Josh Boyd
Defensive end Josh Boyd of Philadelphia, Mississippi is expected to be one of that state's top prospects going into the 2009 season. Boyd (6'4, 273) has BAMA, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Southern Miss vying for his signature.
DL William Ming
Ming (6'4, 250) is a stronside defensive end prospect from Athens who finished his junior year with 77 total tackles and 7 sacks. He's been offered by Auburn and Vandy so far, but expect other schools including BAMA to get into the mix. Stanford, Ole Miss, and Tennessee are some of the other schools interested in Ming.
DL Anthony Orr
According to the mammoth defensive end, an offer from Saban and crew is just around the corner. A welcome offer it will be indeed as Anthony has grown up an Alabama fan. The 6'4, 255-pounder has drawn interest from BAMA, Auburn, Mississippi State and Tennessee.
LB Tana Patrick
One of the truly must have prospects of 2009 is Stevenson linebacker Tana Patrick (6'3, 217). Patrick is no stranger to Tuscaloosa as he's made a number of visits during the season to Bryant-Denny Stadium. He projects as a strongside linebacker in Saban's 3-4 defense and finished his junior year racking up over 70 stops to go with 2 interceptions and a pair of sacks. While he seems to like BAMA, Auburn, Florida, LSU, FSU, and UGA are all in the mix as well.
LB Nico Johnson
Nico Johnson (6'2, 220) would not have you believe that Patrick is the only superstar linebacker prospect coming out of Alabama this year. Johnson is a phenomenal athlete who as a sophomore, made the 4A All-State Team. He's a true middle/inside linebacker who is receiving interest from not only BAMA, but Auburn, Ole Miss, Florida, and LSU, to name a few.
QUARTERBACKS/RUNNING BACKS
QB AJ McCarron
It wouldn't be football recruiting if we didn't have a star quarterback grabbing the attention. Saint Paul's AJ McCarron has been one of the 2009 class's most talked about prospects and he's gone from seemingly being a Tide lean, to being neutral, back to being a Tide lean. While McCarron's former teammates Destin Hood, Mark Barron, and Ivan Matchett will wear crimson, McCarron is still undecided between such schools as BAMA, Oklahoma, Auburn, Tennessee, and Florida State. Expect his recruitment to be a bitterly fought contest until next signing day. As a junior McCarron threw for over 2,500 yards and 26 touchdowns.
QB/ATH Russell Shepard
Okay, here's the thing. Shepard was being recruited to Alabama by former offensive coordinator Major Applewhite. It's hard to say how that situation may play out next year because you never know how much these relationships effect 18 year olds. But, if there is any saving grace in this situation it would be that BAMA has plenty of time to turn the tide, assuming they need to. All that aside, Shepard is a 6'2, 184 pound dual-threat quarterback out of Houston, Texas and currently has offers from BAMA, Arkansas and Texas A&M.
QB Cameron Lawrence
Another dual-threat quarterback, Lawrence plays his high school ball in Senatobia, Mississippi. At this point, it appears Mississippi State is the team to beat for his signature. BAMA, Memphis, Auburn, Clemson, and LSU are in the mix as well.
QB Drew Little
You guys knew that current Tide commit Chris Jackson had a phenomenal year at Henry County High School in Georgia right? You probably know about his 76 receptions and 23 scores as a wide receiver. What you may not have known about was his partner in crime. That accomplice was quarterback Drew Little (6'5, 240). As a junior, Little threw for over 3,100 yards and 41 touchdowns. Take away Jackson's scores and Little still throws for around 20 touchdowns to the other guys. The fact that Texas Tech has shown a great deal of interest in the junior signal caller should clue you in to how good this guy can be. Currently the leaders for Little's signature include BAMA, Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, FSU and Tennessee.
QB Clint Mosely
Another in-state product from a small school, Mosely has led his Leroy High School football team to consecutive state championships in the 2A division. In two seasons as a starter at Leroy, Moseley has passed for almost 4,000 yards and over 40 touchdowns. BAMA is fighting Auburn, Troy, Georgia, Tennessee, Southern Miss, and State for the signature.
RB Desmond Scott
Scott enters his senior season in 2009 as one of the top running back prospects in the country, and is being courted by all of the big-name schools in the Southeast. Scott's junior season saw him tally 7 scores while rushing for over 800 yards. He's also a capable receiver as evidenced by his 29 receptions for 540 yards. Schools pushing for Scott's signature include BAMA, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, to name a few.
RB Tim Simon
As far as running backs go, Cordova High School's Tim Simon is a name that has been bandied around the various BAMA message boards and it's reasonable to assume he's a strong candidate to get an offer from the Tide staff. As a junior Simon led Cordova to the 3A football title while rushing for over 1,900 yards and 34 scores. Schools interested in Simon include BAMA, Notre Dame, Auburn, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. Simon is described as a bruising, powerful back.
RB Michael Ford
No not that one. This one is from Cajun Country (Leesville to be exact) and is regarded as one of the better backs in the 2009 class. While Scout.com lists Ford as a 5-star prospect, Rivals has him just missing their Top-100 list. Either way, he's a solid prospect who should do well at the next level. Ford's numbers are almost non-existent as a junior due to breaking his collarbone in the team's first game of the season. As a sophomore he rushed for over 1,300 yards and 18 scores. BAMA will be fighting LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, UCLA, and Miami for his signature.
RB Drayton Calhoun
Calhoun has been pulling in offers lately, with the most recent coming from the Crimson Tide. BAMA joined Tennessee and Florida in offering the talented back from Tucker, Georgia who finished his junior season rushing for over 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns. Calhoun has received interest from other schools to include Notre Dame, South Carolina, Georgia, and Georgia Tech.
RB Matt Coffee
If the last name rings a bell it's because it should. We don't have a lot on Coffee other than we know that he's a healthy kid at over 212 pounds or so, and that he's being looked at by Saban and company. Matt plays his ball at Fort Walton Beach High School and is being courted by BAMA, FSU, and Auburn. He has an offer from the Zookers of Illinois as well.
OFFENSIVE LINEMEN
OL Johnnie Farms
One of the offensive linemen that attended the Tide staff's Junior Day on February 2nd was Johnnie Farms of Perry high School in Perry, Georgia. There is speculation that Farms (6'2, 283) was offered by BAMA during his trip this past weekend. Regardless of his offer status he's considered one of the top prospects coming out in 2009 regardless of position. Expect Saban and company to put the press on the Peach State prospect. Currently schools interested in Farms include BAMA, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Florida, and FSU, to name a few.
OL Kellen Williams
Williams was another one of BAMA's weekend visitors for Junior Day and is being projected at the offensive tackle position in college. He certainly has the size for it as his 6'5, 300-pound frame would indicate. BAMA is in the mix for his signature, along with Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Maryland.
RECEIVERS
WR Kent Prince
Prince (6'3, 190) is regarded as one of the Peach State's most highly touted prospects heading into 2009. The speedy wide out has had early contact with both South Carolina and Georgia, but insists he has no favorite at this point. That bodes well for BAMA. Other schools vying for Prince's signature include Boston College, Clemson, Miami and Vandy, to name a few.
WR/ATH Mardrecas Hood
Hood is a local product who plays his ball at Pickens County High School in Reform. He projects as an athlete at the next level though he lines up on offense as a wide receiver. He possesses good size and speed (6'3, 185, 4.5 40-yard) which may even allow him to line up at tight in college provided he can add a little weight. Schools interested in Hood include BAMA, Auburn, Florida, and Tennessee.
WR Kenny Bell
Best described as a "big play guy that has good hands and a lot of speed," Bell finished his junior year at Rayville, Louisiana with 58 receptions for almost 1,000 yards and 12 scores. He's being targeted by BAMA, LSU, Florida, FSU, LaTech, and Ole Miss, to name a few.
WR Rueben Randle
Clearly part of the cream in the 2009 recruiting crop, Randle is regarded as one of the best prospects coming out next year regardless of position. The 6'3, 195-pound receiver from Bastrop, Louisiana is getting a look from everyone who is anyone in college football, to include BAMA, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Stanford, Georgia, Florida, and Oklahoma, to name a few.
WR Arthur Williams
Another in-state product (Phenix City) who's been getting some love lately is Glenwood's Arthur Williams (6'2, 173). Williams is a big-play threat who scored 6 touchdowns to go along with his 675 yards in receiving during the first half of his junior campaign. Schools interested in Williams include BAMA, Vandy, Kentucky, Auburn, and East Carolina.
DEFENSIVE BACKS/ATHLETES
DB Dre Kirkpatrick
One name you most certainly wont forget between now and next year's signing day is that of Dre Kirkpatrick from Gadsden City High School. Kirkpatrick will be one of the most sought-after defensive back prospects in all of the nation next season and currently has offers from almost every major program south of the Mason-Dixon. Oh, and there is that college in Los Angeles that is looking hard at Kirkpatrick also. The 6'2, 180 pound junior is regarded by most recruiting services as the top corner prospect out there, while one site lists him as one of the top 10 prospects of 2009 PERIOD! Will the recruitment of Jarrell Harris influence Dre's decision one way or another? Not sure. What is for certain however is that someone is going to strike gold in '09 when they sign this kid. Kirkpatrick holds offers from all the Carolinas, BAMA, Florida, FSU, Southern Cal, and Auburn, to name a few.
DB Jonathan Edwards
Central High School (Tuscaloosa) corner Jonathan Edwards isn't thought of quite as highly as Kirkpatrick, but he's a solid prospect who could get an offer from BAMA. During a junior season that saw him named to the All-State Team (ASWA) Edwards intercepted an astounding 15 passes. Currently schools interested in him include BAMA, Auburn, Florida, FSU and Miami.
DB Josh Peprah
I bet you can't guess who's brother this is! This is not a case of BAMA doing anyone a favor if that's what you're thinking. This is a case of Josh Peprah being one of the best defensive backs coming out of the Texas 2009 class. And BAMA's jumping all over it. Peprah's coach, Johnny Ringo (no, not he guy from Tombstone ) says ((paraphrased)) that "Josh is not a blazer, but really a playmaker who has a real knack for breaking up the ball, and he's an aggressive tackler." Sounds like the kind of defensive back BAMA fans like. BAMA, Florida, OK State, Oklahoma, and Oregon State are among the candidates for Peprah's services.
DB/ATH Eric Gordon
Gordon is another athlete that attended BAMA's Junior Day this past Saturday. According to one of the recruiting services an offer was extended to Gordon during the visit. Gordon hails from Hillsboro, Tennessee and is being looked at by BAMA, Florida, Vandy, Tennessee, and Texas, among others.
ATH Chad Bumphis
The Tupelo athlete goes into the 2009 season as one of Mississippi's most highly-touted recruits. He's already been offered by State, with Ole Miss, BAMA, and Tennessee expected to follow suit. As a junior Bumphis (5'10, 180) compiled over 1,000 yards total offense and scored 5 touchdowns.
With the ink barely dry from the names on the commitment list Nick Saban and company have wasted little time in preparing for the 2009 recruiting run.
