🏈 Shaud Williams: Tide Should Attack Vols with Play Action Pass

The Alabama Crimson Tide are taking on the Tennessee Vols. This game is one of those rivalry games where legends are made, and with Tennessee pulling off the upset by beating South Carolina, it's sure to add to the hype of the game. I'd like to take a look at a play action pass that the Crimson Tide should look to take advantage of after having the ability to run the ball at will last week against the Razorbacks.

Tennessee will watch film of the Arkansas game and see how successful Alabama was running the football and controlling the game. I'm willing to bet that Tennessee will come into this game with the mindset of stopping the run. Look for Tennessee to load the box and sometimes even bring a safety down into the box at linebacker level.

Power pass is a play action pass designed to show the resemblance of a run. This gets the defense to react to the run and opens up passing lanes. This is how it's set up: Alabama will line up in the same formation as they did to run 60 power. The fullback will be offset to the right behind the right guard, and the tailback will be lined up directly behind the quarterback.

Tennessee will have seen this formation on film and will be anticipating the run that Alabama ran last week. The blocking, however, will be a little different for the offensive linemen. At the snap of the ball, the linemen will pass set instead of roaring off the ball like it's a run. Everything else will appear as if it's a run.

The fullback will fake as though he is going to block the end just like 60 power, but instead, he will slip into the flat at five-yards depth as option one in the quarterback's progression. The tailback will then take out the legs of the defensive end so that the quarterback has a clear passing lane to the fullback. By taking out the legs of the defensive end, the end is not able to jump up and block the pass to the fullback if that is who the quarterback chooses to throw the ball to.

Remember, the sole purpose of play action passes are to out flank the defense. Once the quarterback fakes the handoff to the tailback, he should go through his progression. The fullback will be in the flats no deeper than five yards. He will also have a tight end who is lined up on the right that will run a 10-yard corner route. The backside receiver that will be lined up on the left will run a deep post breaking from left to right.

The quarterback will have three options breaking into his line of sight. Option 1: the fullback in the flat. Option 2: the tight end running the corner route. Option 3: the backside receiver running a deep post route.

This play can only work if Alabama runs the ball early, which I expect them to do. The run will set up the play action pass for a big gain. With Tennessee committing to stop the run by stacking the box, this will leave the Alabama receivers matched up one-on-one with the Tennessee corners. I see Alabama taking advantage of that match up.

It will be a game of chess. When Tennessee loads up the box to stop the run early on, look for the play action pass. When Tennessee looks to stop the big plays in the passing game, look for Alabama to take advantage by running the ball. It should be a good game early on. Tennessee will come in feeling confident after a huge upset. Alabama will weather the early emotions of the Vols and eventually take control of the game.
