🏀 SEC Tourney Semi-Finals! Bama drops close game to Kentucky

When it's working, nothing is so simple as a coach's game plan.

You'll like this, I suspect. From the Tuscaloosa News.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – “Rebound or lose.”

That was Avery Johnson’s motivational speech to his Alabama basketball team on Friday as it prepared to face South Carolina in the quarterfinals of the SEC Basketball Tournament. There was none of what Johnson called “fire and brimstone,” just that simple message.

It worked. Alabama won on the backboards — and that led to a 64-53 victory that put Alabama into a high-profile Saturday semifinal against No. 8 Kentucky.

“I told them that we needed all five guys on the boards,” Johnson said. “I told them that if we were minus-five on the boards, that’s a loss.”

The final rebounding margin was 42-27, and both Johnson and South Carolina coach Frank Martin conceded that it was the difference in the paint that mattered.

“We had some 3-pointers that were big, but not as big as those rebounds,” Johnson said.

Martin was more explicit.

“They beat us to every loose ball, destroyed us on the glass,” Martin said. “We were very non-competitive in the effort plays, guarding the basketball, rebounding. And you can’t win the game if you don’t rebound.

“You go play Alabama, you’ve got to have some dogs. We had little puppies out there today.”
@TUSKstuff ...and you were saying what about the simple things?

Dang Terry, shouldn't have been too hard to remember something that finally worked. Bama's been struggling to score points off of set plays out of clock stoppages all season and it's been one of our bigger buggaboos for this team. The inbound play is more of the same.
Here's another situation where we're looking at the same thing, but still taking a different view.

After watching inbound sets for the last five years I was pleased with seeing some improvement there this season. Yes, long way to go with what I picture as a "solid, in-bound play game." But, never-the-less, another area judged and found better in my eyes.

The only time I have an issue with an inbound plays' pass going over the line it's when there's 15 or less on the shot clock. If it's a full clock, or even one around the 18-20 mark, set the play and run.

A lot of people have been down on our boys this year, mainly saying we're not a tournament team, which is bullshit. Our boys can play with anybody. Of course we've struggled, but we have the talent of a Top 32 team. You know what, Duke and Kentucky struggled at times this year too. No team is immune from the struggles.

Our boys fighting thru the continued shitty officiating we've endured all season in conference play.

Up by 9 early, then calls start going Kenfucky's way. The most memorable of the 1st half being Collins outside the restricted circle with his feet set and hands extended. Clear offensive foul if there ever was one. But Collins gets whistled for a block instead.

Still hanging tough despite the Kenfucky fix, down 33-32 at halftime.

It only took three and a half minutes before Dickie V starts talking about Bama football. I'm guessing, despite ignoring most of the commentary, I've heard Bama football references (or Saban references) a dozen times or more.

Ah, another one ...

We desperately need shooters. Ingram has passed on several outside, wide open shots. If he can't make it, I get not taking it but KY realizes that both Ingram & Key are only looking to drive the ball. Help is on the way.

PS-Dicky V is really just a Dicky. His 'Schtick' has gotten old.

That was his timeout from slobbering all over Cal and UK... He rarely gets as excited about a Bama three or big play like he does UK.

Hard to play 5 on 8! We hit 75% from the FT line but UK shoots 16 more!! A lot of phantom "and one calls!"
Vitale and Tess really were slobbering all over that UK knob!! It would have been nice to hear similar excitement on a BAMA shot!
The future is bright for BAMA and CAJ. They played hard and fought every step of the way. Never saw any quit! ESPN put up a stat that I thought was quite telling. 9 of our 13 losses (10 of 14 now) were by less than 9 points. Adding Sexton and Petty to Key, Ingram, Hall, and Co. will mean a lot of excitement is coming to T'town.

I agree, it's hard to beat kentucky and the officials. To win consistantly though against any team is to play smart, sound fundamental basketball for the whole forty minutes. Ask any great coach of any sport and they will say the same thing. Look at how much CNS drills and dwells on fundamentals.
