SEC announces plan if conference championship game is cancelled

The 2020 College Football season has certainly been an interesting one. Players opting out, conferences cancelling seasons, games getting postponed, rescheduled or even scratched all together.
With numbers surging and more games beig cancelled, a plan is in place for the SEC if the conference championhip game is not played.

Plans for most conferences were revealed to ESPN, which then noted that considering all the dates, a College Football Playoff bracket of four should be set by Dec. 20.
ā€œIn the SEC, the two divisional champions will be declared co-champions, and any team ranked in the top four of the final CFP rankings would automatically be placed in a playoff semifinal game.ā€

Meaning, if Alabama wins the SEC West, and Florida wins the SEC East, both the Crimson Tide and the Gators will be named co-champions.
Currently, the SEC Championship Game is scheduled for Dec. 19 in Atlanta, Georgia.

So what does that mean for them as Florida #6 right behind Texas A and M #5, will be left out or what happens when ND, Clemson or Ohio state drops a game?

This affect the Heisman Race as well. Mac has to perform well in last two games and Trask to have 1 bad game to have a chance.

Agreed, but a 7-0 GaTech is better than a 5-0 UT team in 1951, and Bama at 6-0 vs. GA at 5-0 in 1966, or 7-0 Bama vs. 6-0 LSU in '61, or Bama at just 7-0 vs. Tulane's 8-0 in '34.

Pains me to say it but UGA's 1966 SEC record is considered 6-0 due to appointed games. Their game with UNC was counted as a conference game.
Note that in 1964, Tulane was "appointed" Miami , but in 1966 UGA was given UNC. Miami was UGA's only loss in 1966.

1966
Conference Overall School....................... W-L-T Pct. Pts. Opp. W-L-T Pts. Opp.
*Alabama .................. 6-0-0 1.000 149 37 10-0-0 267 37
**Georgia.................. 6-0-0 1.000 104 58 9-1-0 211 89

*Appointed Conference Games

While the SEC rule requiring six football games with member schools was in effect, 16 games with outside schools were appointed to serve as conference games to avoid a violation for the members. The won-lost records of these games are included in the annual conference standings, but the results are not included in the conference point totals.
1954 – Ole Miss vs. Arkansas, 0-6
1958 – Ole Miss vs. Houston, 56-7
1964 – Tulane vs. Miami, 0-21
1965 – Georgia vs. Clemson, 23-9 Tennessee vs. S. Carolina, 24-3
1966 – Florida vs. Tulane, 31-10 Georgia vs. N. Carolina, 28-3 LSU vs. Tulane, 21-7 Tennessee vs. S. Carolina, 29-17 Vanderbilt vs. Tulane, 12-13

And for some reason in 1980. The SEC told Bama that the Ole Miss game would not be counted as a SEC game! Because Bama was again playing 7 SEC games.

1981 also. Reason being that in 1980 the Six SEC Game Minimum rule became the Six SEC Game Minimum/Maximum rule. Bama and Ole Miss already had the seventh games scheduled with each other in 80-81. Since they didn't want to cancel them they played, despite what you nay have heard otherwise, the ONLY two regular season games in the history of the SEC played between members that did not count in the standings.

^ Alabama-Ole Miss game does not count in standings. You will not find this footnote ANYWHERE in the SEC Record Book other than at the bottom of the 1980 and 1981 standings.
