šŸˆ Season Opener with USC 2012 ?

The other night at the Crimson Caravan in Montgomery (May 14) after Coach Saban’s speech I got the opportunity to ask Coach Saban a question. I ask him if there was anything in the works or a possibility in the near future of a season opener with USC in Texas Stadium.

Coach Saban’s reply was he didn’t know where people got there sources for there inside information. I felt he was fixing to skin me up but he went on to say that they would be interested and he was sure that everybody knew that a home and home was established with Penn St. for 2010 and 2011 and Michigan St. for 2016 and 2017.

He also stated there is an open date in 2012 and we’ll have to see how it all works out.

So he really never confirmed or denied that it may be in the works.

I have heard from several friends that Greg McElroy’s farther who is the Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing Officer of the Dallas Cowboys may be trying to make this happen.

This would be tremendous. Thought I would share this with you and see if anybody else knows of this being a possibility. :a:

:hyper:That would be a fantastic game. Let's all cross our fingers that it happens. Bunch of great games already planned for the future, this would be an incredible addition. Just look at how quick he has righted our ship's voyage. We are fortunate to have a coach that cares and knows how to be successful!

This is not happening.

Two things...

A couple of years ago our Ath. Dept. tried to get a home and home set up with USC but the two schools couldn't get the dates squared away.

Two, the 2012 schedule for USC is full.

But this is a one game deal. And I could see USC buying out of the Hawaii game if Jerry Jones wanted to give Bama and them 5 mil each as he is doing Arkansas and the TAM's. On second thought, they wouldn't even have to buy out Hawaii because it is an extra game allowed. They would have to change the Hawaii date.

I don't see USC buying out the Hawaii game because they agreed to a home and home series for '12 and '13 and they already have Hawaii on the schedule for '10.

It seems like they are getting the groundwork set for something like we had with Southern Miss for so long.

2009: San Jose State, at Ohio State, at Notre Dame
2010: at Hawaii, Virginia, at Minnesota, Notre Dame
2011: Minnesota, Syracuse, at Notre Dame
2012: Hawaii, at Syracuse, Notre Dame
2013: at Hawaii, Boston College, at Notre Dame

But as you can see by the 2010 schedule, they would not have to buy out Hawaii. It is an extra game allowed. All they would have to do is change the date of the 2012 Hawaii game.

How many games are allowed in '12?

As far as I know you are allowed 12 games every year now. However, if you play Hawaii, you are allowed an additional game. That is why USC has 13 games scheduled in 2010. They can do the same in 2012 because they are playing Hawaii again. At present they have only 12 games scheduled, so in order to schedule Bama and open with them, all they would need to do is change the Hawaii date.

That I understand.

Where I'm lost on this is the Hawaii game is on the mainland, not in Hawaii.

I thought you could have that extra game only if you played Hawaii off of the mainland. In 2012, USC plays at home.

I thought it worked both ways, but in looking back at 2006 when Bama played them in Tuscaloosa it was not an extra game. So the onlly way they could make it work would be to move the Hawaii game to another year as Bama did Tulane this year. Or just buy out Hawaii. Probably wouldn't hurt their feelings anyway. They like to play at home with their refs. Remember!?

 I recall their fans a little on the...err, we'll just say "rough" side.

The rule change with Hawaii happened when? My gut tells me it was after we played in 2006.

But, going with what you just said according to this database Washington State played 13 games last year and their game was in Hawaii. If you look over the last couple of years you see teams playing there did have 13 games.

Using '07 as an example, New Mexico St. played in Hawaii and had 13 games with no bowl. Washington did as well. But I don't see any teams Hawaii played on the road with 13 total games except those that "bowled."

For as long as I can remember, Hawaii has been an extra game. I just thought it was an extra game whether you played them home or away. They play so few here anyway, I had never noticed that was not the case. Who the heck wants to play them here anyway? If I'm going to play Hawaii, I'm GOING to HAWAII!

If I am not mistaken, the rule has to do with playing outside the Continental 48 States and not just in Hawaii. When ND plays Navy in Dublin, Ireland in 2012, I believe that will be an extra game.
