The search to find a replacement for outgoing University of Alabama President Judy Bonner remains on track, according to the president pro tem of the systemās board of trustees.
āThe Presidential Search Advisory Committee has been hard at work. As you would imagine, the task of identifying top-quality candidates with the skills and expertise to lead and manage a large, complex and rapidly advancing institution like the University of Alabama is an exciting and challenging process,ā said Karen Brooks, the trusteesā president pro tem.
Brooks is part of a 24-person committee formed after Bonner announced plans last winter to step down by the end of September and return to teaching after a yearlong sabbatical. The University of Alabama System hopes to find a replacement for Bonner by the fall.
The committee of system and campus administrators, trustees, alumni, community leaders and students began the search this spring with the aid of consultant Ann Die Hasselmo of the Washington, D.C.-based firm Academic Search Inc.
No on-campus interviews have been scheduled yet, said system spokeswoman Kellee Reinhart.
In a search committee meeting in January, Brooks said the group is seeking a leader to continue the rapid growth UA has seen during the past decade. The committee met in January to begin discussing the attributes it wanted in Bonnerās successor.
The committee believes ideal candidates should have a ātransformational and energetic leadershipā style and significant experience as a president or senior administrator, according to a list of 19 attributes released by the system office
The candidates should have proven records of building and sustaining a leadership team in an environment that prioritizes shared governance; leading a complex and fiscally robust institution; maintaining and advancing academic excellence; developing and executing sound strategic plans; significant involvement in recruiting and retaining students; and a proven commitment to diversity, inclusivity and fairness.
The candidates should also have the ability to be a successful fundraiser, guide UAās large and successful Division I athletic program, work well with alumni and alumni associations, build community partnerships, significantly advance UAās research profile, have an understanding and appreciation of the culture and milieu of UA, and be committed to having a student-centered university.
The search committee will make a recommendation to the system chancellor, who will make a final recommendation to the UA board of trustees for approval.
