all those years of coaching to get the record number of wins and now we are finding out about something that happened almost 10 years ago. hell of a way to go out if he in fact didn't report this the way he should have.

CYA mode is in full effect now...

I love Joe Pa. Absolutely love the guy. I love Bobby Knight too. I hate that Knight's IU career ended because of a nebulous ethical policy designed by a university President who was a coward.

With Paterno...... and this could change 'cause the facts are still murky, I think he could have done more, should have in fact. I don't know what words McQuery used when he talked to him but he obviously told him something inappropriate was happening and Paterno, for maybe the first time as the Penn State Head Coach did the bare minimum.

For a guy who always did more than the minimum, I'm disappointed.

I can't really comment on JoePa without knowing the facts. I'm still trying to find a safe, good link of the court documents. I've heard it's pretty disgusting to read and as a parent I am not sure if I even want to. Can you imagine what some of the parents might be thinking that sent their kids to overnight camps there in the past? I'm just sickened by what little I've read on it so far. Just crazy and the fact he had some donation or kids fund is just even more sick.

If Paterno isn't held to a higher standard than reporting to the AD then I think it's a sad day in sports in general. Look, I'm upset enough that Jordan Jefferson was even on the field Sat. night. After what he did he is now a "savior" to the LSU team and will probably be sporting a ring to boot. That, to me, is disgusting. Dude should be facing harsh consequences not riding off in the sunset as a hero.

That said that pales in comparison to what when on at Penn State. Listen I don't know if Paterno is telling the truth or covering himself at this moment. Let's just say he did just think it was something odd or unusual going on and didn't know about the sex part. Wouldn't he at least have confronted Sandusky and held his feet to the fire? Obviously he didn't do that. He and Sandusky maintained a very close friendship and well as the couples themselves. He was continued to come and go at Penn State for years. Paterno never followed up with any of it and never demanded more info.??? That just isn't right. He totally let it go, never speaking of it again. That doesn't cut it in my book. Sounds like Paterno didn't want to know more, and for that he should be held accountable and step down, period.

I put myself in the camp of those who have admired Joe Pa for a long time. What went on is reprehensible, and those that covered it up should be penalized beyond losing their jobs. It is not clear to me, from what has been revealed so far, what level of blame, if any, should be asessed to him. Just how much did the GA tell him? Did he tell all he was told to the AD? Did he inquire of his AD the status of any investigation? If so, what was he told? Until these and other similar questions are answered I will not condemn him/

JoePa should have retired years ago. I respect what he has accomplished, but I also see alot of ego in a man that holds on despite being left behind by his competitors for over 10 years now ('05 and '08 were the only double digit win years). They had a pretty impressive run in the 90s and that's when he should have turned it over to somebody else and he wouldn't have even been there for all of this.

in the same camp as you psychojoe, way too early to form my opinion.

my point to this thread, sad that you work so hard to build your image and then something like this could potentially unwind 40+ years of hard work.

these guys wouldn't be going to trial had I been one of the victims dads.

I imagine that he will step down after this season. I hate to see it. The man has done so much for college football and for so many young men. As an educator, I must report potential signs of abuse, neglect, etc. to my administrators and counselor. After I have done that, legally, I am off the hook but it still pains me to know that someone could still drop the ball and allow something to happen and it quite possibly fall back to me. It is too early to tell if Coach Paterno told everything or if he merely said that there was possibly a misunderstanding or whatever. I hope the man did tell all. I would hate to see his reputation destroyed by a coverup.

My sentiments exactly.

ESPN is quoting NYT as a matter of days, or perhaps a few weeks, before JoePa steps down. I don't think he'll see the season out. He'd have been better off to strangle an opposing linebacker than not report a molestation.

him stepping down should be the least of the talk surrounding this... he was getting pushed out regardless, they were actively seeking meyer.. it shouldn't even be a question. if i were a player on that team, i could not possibly play for him right now.

i honestly don't care how great of a coach he is or how much of a legend he is. to me, you are the WORST of everything negative in human nature if you can not only sit idly by while this happens, but remain FRIENDS with this guy?!? i'm sorry, that physically makes me ill. you can even continue walking in the building where this supposedly happened- to a TEN YR OLD BOY- and not be affected enough to do anything? i don't think i've ever agreed with the police more in my life than with this statement...

""Somebody has to question the moral requirements for a human being that knows of sexual things that are taking place with a child," and that, "I think you have the moral responsibility, anyone. Not whether you're a football coach or a university president or the guy sweeping the building. I think you have a moral responsibility to call us.""
