The University of Alabama National Alumni Association board has named head football coach Nick Saban and his wife, Terry Saban, honorary alumni of the Capstone.
āThis is an unbelievable honor for me because I have so much respect for the university and alumni who have worked so hard to make the tradition of the University of Alabama one of the most special places in America,ā Saban said in a statement released by the university. ā... I can only hope that I have represented you and done what you expect us to do and earned all the things that you have wanted us to do as a coach here, as a leader in the community in a first class way that represents this institution.ā
The Sabans were recognized at the start of Fridayās Nick@Noon luncheon at the Bryant Conference Center. The pair were honored for their embodiment of the Capstone spirit through their community support.
The Sabans have donated $7 million to nonprofit organizations and contributed more than $350,000 to Childrenās of Alabama hospital as part of their support in the community during their decade in Tuscaloosa.
āItās been an incredible almost 11 years at the university,ā Terry Saban said. āOur children are adopted, and when they were little we would tell them how special it was that we chose them to be part of our family. And now, youāve adopted us. Weāre part of your family.ā
The association on Friday donated $10,000 to Nickās Kids Foundation, the Saban family charity organization that is dedicated to raising awareness and resources for deserving organizations in Alabama and the Southeast.
āThereās no doubt in my mind that this University is living its finest hour, and the Sabans have had a lot to do with that,ā UA Director of Alumni Affairs Calvin Brown said. āWe owe them a huge debt of gratitude.ā
