🏈 Saban on AFCA proposal to allow true freshmen to play up to four games without burning their shirt

“I absolutely would be in favor of that (change),” he said with enthusiasm. “One of the most difficult things (for true freshmen) is they can’t play a game for a year (if they redshirt). It would enhance their development, and you might be able to play some more of your players.

“It would help young guys to be able to play and not lose the year. It probably would be a good thing. I think with a guy having the opportunity to play without being held out for the entire season is better for player development.”

When asked, Saban said the proposal would have helped Ravens first-rounder Marlon Humphrey, who took a redshirt his first year on campus.

“I don’t think there’s any question,” he said. “We’d have loved to have played Marlon, and he probably deserved to play some.”

Is Saban in favor of another proposal, to just give all players five full seasons to play? Not really.

“I don’t know what the right degree (of games played) is,” he said. “I like the four-game deal better. I don’t know if having a guy play five years is better or not.”

I am not opposed to the idea but I think a better solution would be to allow 5 years for all incoming players. No redshirt year, just 5 years total to play in as many games as possible.

Absolutely.....with all the ....4 games doesnt count as a year...spring signing but can opt out with coaching change...starting to sound like our Federal Income Tax with exclusions and appendixes with waivers and standard deductions...
Give 5 years...no grayshirts or redshirts or those other shirts....just football...
Or go backto freshman aren't eligible and have Thursday night SEC Freshman only games....(just kidding....but for those that dont know....SEC teams use to have freshman only games when freshmen were not eligible for varsity....including..yep you got it...Bama vs AU...of course scholarships were un limited and freshman squads were fulled up)
