🏈 Rope a Dope, or Something up The Ol Ball Coach's Sleeve?

If our game plan is to rip their arms off and beat them about the neck and head with them, what difference does it make what is up someone's sleeve?

If we take care of our own business, we win this game everytime. WE are the only team that can beat us.

I've seen his press conferences since he's been at S. Carolina, and he's showing as much there as he did Wofford last season.

It's interesting to me catching key phrases and themes out of pressers.

Yesterday, with Coach Grant's first presser about the basketball season it was all about "are the players buying into the system?" (wonder where that came from?)

With USC, it seems to be a prevailing thought on which team is feeling the most pressure about a win in this contest? That's a line of questioning I still can't quite wrap my mind around.

Does Alabama want to win more, and the win means more, so therefore more pressure?

Then there's the "nothing to lose" questions... :lance:

I think Spurrier is working on his own team here. As someone pointed out in another thread this is the 4th straight season that SC has reached thhe halfway mark at 5-1. In each case their season has gone south from that point, with the best regular season finish being 8-4, if memory serves. I believe he is trying to keep his team relaxed and loose to keep them from going into another second half death spiral.

As cocky as Steve has been over the years, no pun intended, he will also turn and say they got beat, or whipped, or "not as good as those other guys" and stuff like that. I think he is being careful because he knows he is outmatched as a team and is going to have to coach 'em up big time.

You could listen to his comments and draw the conclusion he was already conceding defeat. You hear him making comments about needing to focus on games after Alabama, a lot of football left...

Honestly, it reminds me a bit of how Beamer sounded before our game to open the season.

I didn't hear Beamer before the kickoff game this year, but based off of both team's play through the first half of the year, VT is a better team than USCe.

I'm going to agree with TWJUA in that Spurlid knows he is outmatched and is trying anything he can to not out-and-out say it.

And psychojoe is also on the money. South Carolina starts out strong record wise every year, but they falter late because every year the back end of their schedule is loaded with teams that are either strong or have good D's. Their last six games this year include Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama on the road and Vandy, Florida, Clemson at home. Of those 6 teams, only one is a given for a win. At least four (possibly 5 if Arkansas gets their D going strong) of those teams will give the Gamecocks fits defensively (they had to settle for field goals against UGA and got held to 7 points by NCSU).

All that said...LBS said it perfectly
If we take care of our own business, we win this game everytime. WE are the only team that can beat us.
