At an event in Athens, Tennessee, Alabama Crimson Tide football coach Nick Saban said that former All American linebacker Rolando McClain is back in school at Alabama.
McClain has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons since he was drafted 8th overall in 2010 by the Oakland Raiders after helping lead the Crimson Tide to the National Championship. After a tumultuous three years with the Raiders that featured a multitude of arrests, McClain was cut by the team in April.
He signed with the Baltimore Ravens, but less than a month after putting pen to paper, he was arrested again in his hometown of Decatur, Alabama. McClain decided to retire from the NFL after his most recent arrest to try and focus on getting his life in order. It was a mature decision by the former standout linebacker, and he has taken the first step in doing so by returning to the Capstone to try and obtain his degree.
McClain received Academic All-American honors as a sophomore at Alabama to add to the numerous awards he earned on the football field.
This is a major step in the right direction as now McClain is surrounded by the same support system he had during his playing days in Tuscaloosa. Nick Saban and company should be able to keep him straight just like they did during his three years as a player. If McClain is serious about getting his degree, then maybe he is serious about making a change for the better.
McClain received a ton of criticism from the media and fans alike when he announced his sudden retirement from the NFL, but stepping away from football is probably the best thing for him as he attempts to rehabilitate his image.
A return to football is possible one day for McClain, but for now he has shifted his focus to his personal life. McClain should only be a few credits away from graduating, and earning his college degree would show NFL teams that he has made a serious change, and could very well help earn him another shot in the league.
