In answer to the question about retired Alabama numbers, the answer is yes, at one point there were two retired numbers...22 and 54. Not that they were ever actually hoisted in the stadium, but they were taken out of circulation. Anyone remember the details?

I have to disagree with you on this one.

Those numbers may have not been used one year, or two, but never retired.

FWIW, the only thing I can think of that is symbolic about the two jersey numbers is Musso had 22, and Jordan wore 54.

Time period you think these were "retired?"

I know that on Coach Bryant's time those numbers were never retired, but after Lordan and after Musso you had to earn the right to wear that number. It may have been the same with 73, whose most distinguished wearers were Billy Neigbors and John Hannah.

"Retired" and "special" are different. D.J. Hall wore 22 (along with Ingram), Kindall Morehead wore 54 last I think. Good players, but I wonder if the significance of the numbers has stood the test of time.

Check that...Harbin has 54 and Vlachos has 73 this year.

Don't get me wrong. 22, 54, 73 and more recently 2 and 4 have special meaning. They should.

I had to search a little bit but I remembered something about having to "earn" the right to wear a certain number.....sort of like what Ole Miss does with Chucky Mullins #.

When Dubose first came to Alabama, he wore jersey No. 57. But the jersey he wanted was No. 54. That one belonged to Jordan, perhaps one of the Tide's most famous and popular players. After Jordan left Alabama, Tide coach Paul "Bear" Bryant gave No. 54 to only the best and Mike had his mind set on earning that jersey. By the time his junior year rolled around, Mike had earned number 54. "I was stunned when Coach Bryant gave me that number," Dubose remembered, "and I worked extremely hard to keep it."

For the record the Ole Miss #38 is now officially retired. That happened a couple of years ago.

DuBose tried that with DT's number...
