šŸˆ Report: Alabama will open 2018 season vs. Louisville in Orlando

The last report I saw suspected $3.5M payout. Hell, TAMU/Arkansas get like $5M each to play in Dallas every year.

Here's some of the details on who gets paid what:

Alabama, FSU due super-sized extra value paydays in 2017 Chick-fil-A Kickoff

Alabama and Florida State aren’t playing in the 2017 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game for the money. They’re playing in it for the $#!+ load of money, as Lone Starr (from Spaceballs… The Movie) might say. The 2017 contest,
previously announced, will come with a $5 million paycheck to each school.

The Tallahassee Democratreported the figures Friday afternoon, but the high payout should be no surprise at this point. In fact, it is probably to be expected, especially for Alabama and Florida State. Florida State will be due $3.5 million for a 2016 game in Orlando against Ole Miss. Alabama has had some good payouts come their way through neutral site games. In 2012 Alabama received $4.7 million for playing in the Cowboys Classic in Arlington against Michigan. Alabama and West Virginia split $6.4 million after participating in last season’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

For the sake of comparison, Florida is expected to receive $6 million for playing Michigan in Arlington to open the 2017 season.

As for the smaller details of the 2017 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, because it is never too soon to start planning, Alabama will be the home team and will wear home uniforms. This will be Florida State’s first appearance in the game, while Alabama will look to keep its undefeated mark (3-0) going.

Does this look like the face of a scared man?

I've been to a couple of the neutral site games, and I would much prefer a home and home series.

I think it would be great to have a home and home with ND, Nebraska, USC, PS, etc.

Maybe the economics don't work as well, but would prefer it.

I prefer a home and home, but I like the neutral site game. Getting that payout is like playing with house money after doubling down on blackjack and nailing it big. We take a 3.5 mil payday and then dish out 500k here for a game or 1 mil here for another. I understand that it is all about getting into those recruiting hotbed areas. I imagine that IF the Orange Bowl committee was to set up a season opener, Saban would jump at the chance.

Not a big fan of this match. All Risk and No reward

. I understand that it is all about getting into those recruiting hotbed areas.

There's nothing about 'Ville that makes me look forward to seeing this game although there are some rewards found. @uagrad93 hits on what is probably the biggest advantage; the recruiting bed that is the Orlando area.

I'm not a big fan of the Citrus Bowl location as well. The stadium, once inside, is as nice as some of the other regular season venues the Tide have played in...

All that said...1990's game against the Cardinal's is something I can't just dismiss. That '90 season was one...well, sure a lot of you guys remember.

I dismissed the Louisville loss when Bama won the '92 NC. Stallings mailed the Louisville game in and went recruiting, which led to the NC. Both of which led to the current "dead period" in recruiting during Bowl season. Anything that gives Bama that kind of advantage has to be against the rules.

Besides, Schnellenberger had seven weeks to prepare for Bama. Bama played two games, Cincinnati and Auburn, after Louisville finished their season on 11/10 against BC and accepted the Fiesta Bowl bid. Schnellenberger sat 3 rows below me at the IB knowing full well he was going to play Bama. The other Fiesta bid was supposed to be between Bama and Ole Miss, but the State of Arizona was in the midst of a huge controversy over the recognition of MLK's Birthday and there was no way in hell that the Fiesta Bowl was going to invite Ole Miss with their Rebel flags.

The other thing I remember about '90 was Bret Favre having 30 inches of small intestine removed and being released from the hospital on the Wednesday before the opener. And getting way more credit than due for the Southern Mississippi win. Instead of being just Stallings first game at Bama it looked like it was the first game in the history of the Bama program. I was there and it looked like they had never played a football game. IOW, it was more Bama losing than Southern Mississippi winning.

@252BAMA I can't say I remember the '90 season like yesterday. Like last week? Now we're getting close.

There's no way I'm going to even suggest credit isn't due to what Schnellenberger built at Louisville. From the construction of Papa John's Stadium (a build he was largely responsible for the fund-raising with) to how he was scheduling what we call "Power conference teams" I look at his tenure there as the cornerstone to what Petrino accomplished, what Strong was able to accomplish, and what suspect we'll see from Petrino part deux.

Even with that NC win in '92 that Fiesta Bowl was just downright...let's go with bad. Geez, that first quarter... :bandhead:

Louisville was totally prepared. Bama was totally unprepared.

Howard sent the Bama brass a message due to them not selecting him as the HC. Word then was those making the choice had some issues with his appearance as well as other issue. If you recall Howard was dressed in his Navy double breasted sport coat and well groomed. He beat the shit out of us and made us like it. Bama was just enjoying going to the Bowl game. I can tell you this. My high school HC was Co-Captain of the 1958 team and is opinion then and today is other than Coach Bryant Howard was the smartest man on that staff.

Howard sent the Bama brass a message due to them not selecting him as the HC

When Croom was pulling his crap over in Starkville one of the first people that came to mind was Schnell (followed quickly by Ellis Johnson) with both coaches either unwilling, or unable, to understand the decision was one made based on them ... not their past contributions to the team and school.

... as well as other issue.

Ultimately costing him the OU gig.

I'll admit part of the reason that loss in the Fiesta has sat so sorely with me are the two games playing in the mid-70's ... memories of those beatdowns when I was a kid didn't do anything to qualm my disgust at that bowl appearance.
