Remembering the USFL

Now, some of us aren't old enough to have even been alive during that time but going back and watching alot of the games growing up (my dad was a big Birmingham fan so he had a bunch on tape) as well as reading several books and watching the documentaries on it (football nerd here) I can really appreciate it tho its kinda lost in history now. I think people forget the amount of talent in that league: Herschel Walker, Marcus Dupree, Doug Flutie, Jim Kelly, Reggie White, Steve Young, Anthony Carter, etc. and for us Bama fans Walter Lewis and Joey Jones as well as coaches like Steve Spurrier and Jim Mora. Alot of the owners (Burt Reynolds and that asshole Donald Trump for example) got more of the exposure even.

Don't forget about the WFL either. But like the USFL getting top college players, the WFL got top NFL players: L.C. Greenwood, Kenny Stabler, Larry Csonke, Jim Kick, Paul Warfield, Calvin Hill, Jethro Pugh.

Yeah its a little bit older and information about it is alot harder to come by so I dont know as much about the WFL other than Johnny Musso played for the Birmingham team. Snake never played in the WFL tho, he signed with the Birmingham team but the league folded before he ever played.

So did I! That was the first spring league (other than AFL) in my lifetime and I was so disappointed. at how awful the Bolts were (and who the coach was :/). I still have some Bolts hats somewhere around here. Loved the fact that we finally had a pro football team again tho but didnt last. Still hope one day we will get a spring league that could last. The NFL is sponsoring a new league called the A-11 so maybe that will be it.

I remember it. I was able to go to a couple of Stallions' games. I really enjoyed that, esp. since we had Joey Jones and Cliff Stoudt (the Steelers' fan in me enjoyed seeing Stoudt finally getting some playing time).

There were a lot of great college stars in the league. I still remember the quote in SI that read: Herschel Walker to the USLF. "Oh my God!" says Pete Rozelle.

No cap on anything. That how Herschel with to the General, well with Donald Trump money too. But a lot of guys I think if it wasn't for the USFL, some wouldn't had played in the NFL.
