📝 Rashaan Evans, a linebacker I'd love to see Bama get, schedules official visit for the 17th.

He was originally scheduled to take his official to Auburn that weekend.

He's visiting UGA on the 24th, and has the last weekend of the month currently open.

He'd certainly be a nice get.

Didnt his dad play (briefly) at the barn?

Yes, and then transferred to Vandy?

I just saw a note by Rodney that mentioned the Auburn staff is sitting down with Evans having to explain how he'd fit in their system and how they would alter their system to accentuate his talents.

That might not seem like that big of a deal...EXCEPT, the kid lives in Auburn. He's in their backyard and they're having to do that, now?!?!

I very well may mean nothing in the end...but it definitely is one of those things that make me pause...

Sneaky pairing...

planomateo Or, logical pairing. They played together year before last...both from Auburn high school...both linebackers...

I realize this is a wish for me...but I'll continue wishing. Even if he ends up at Auburn he's going to be a kid we hear about for years, I suspect.

Alabama rolls out red carpet for 5-star Rashaan Evans' official visit

It's been a busy weekend for Auburn High School star Rashaan Evans, who visited with coaches from Alabama and Auburn on Thursday night before heading to Tuscaloosa for his official visit to Alabama on Friday.

After two days in Tuscaloosa, Evans awoke Sunday morning to learn he had been named the new No. 1 player in the AL.com A-List.

"Rashaan was very excited about it," said Evans' father Alan Evans. "It's really a tremendous honor to be called the best player in the state, especially this year when there is so much great talent in the state of Alabama. Rashaan has worked extremely hard his entire high school career. He set goals for himself in 9th grade and now he's starting to see the fruits of that labor."

Before learning of his new ranking, Evans spent his weekend in Tuscaloosa, where he was hosted by a familiar face during his official visit to UA.

"Reuben Foster was Rashaan's host for the weekend. They were obviously good friends and teammates when Reuben was at Auburn High," Evans' father said. "Reuben couldn't say enough about how much he loves being at Alabama and said he really thinks Rashaan would be a great fit playing alongside him in the linebacker corps at Alabama. They had a great time together the whole weekend."

"On Saturday, we went to Coach Saban's house for dinner and spent a lot of time with him and with Miss Terry. They really treated us like royalty. It was a great time."

Evans and his family also spent time meeting with Nick Saban and Kirby Smart discussing how he would be utilized in the Crimson Tide defense.

"They have maintained all along they really like Rashaan at the Sam linebacker position as an edge rusher. They feel like he could make an early impact for them as a pass rusher and they also said they really need a smaller, faster player like Rashaan at the position to help them stop the spread offenses they are facing so much more of these days."

Evans is being recruited by both Alabama and UCLA as an outside linebacker while Auburn is recruiting Evans for its "Star" hybrid linebacker/safety position. Evans' father said the distinction between those two roles could play a big factor in his son's decision.

"It will be a major discussion point in the decision, for sure. It's going to come down to which position and which coaching staff will put him in the best position to succeed down the line as an NFL prospect."

Evans will next visit Auburn, where he'll take his official visit beginning next Friday.

"I'm sure Auburn will throw everything they've got at Rashaan and they won't make this an easy decision by any means. We're excited to talk to their coaches and see where we stand then."

planomateo Notice "entire defensive staff" doesn't include Malzahn—undoubtedly angling for the last in-home visit from a head coach.

I can't blame him.

From purely a football position standpoint it's an interesting choice Rashaan has to make: the STAR position in Johnson's defense or the SAM position in Bama's. He's being "pitched" two completely different position/roles on defense.

An update, for the heck of it.

A few weeks ago it was the intention of Malzahn to make sure he was the last in-home visit Evans would receive. It's going to end that way, in a sense.

He's going to be the last head coach to visit RE for the official in-home. However, Smart is scheduled to stop by the Evans' after Malzahn leaves.

A few notes from the last few days.

Despite what some of you guys may have read in different places the visit with Saban and Smart went very well.

It may not be the "deciding factor," but where RE will fit in each teams' scheme is a major factor. The family was impressed with how our staff laid out there plans. We're pitching his role as a linebacker while Auburn is pitching how they change their defense to fit what he brings. Bottom line, they want to use him in the hybrid safety role. (If you followed Johnson when he was at UofSC he called that position "Spur." I don't know what term they are using down there for the position.)

Auburn still has to be considered to be the favorite in landing Evans—family ties, though not that strong and very possibly a bit overblown are a factor. We can't ignore there's going to be a strong pull, emotionally, considering he's from Auburn.

If anyone tries to convince you, or others in a conversation you might be lurking into, that it's a lock for Auburn? Don't buy it. If they try to convince you he's just playing the recruiting game? Again, don't be sold.

All that said I won't be surprised, in the least, if he doesn't pick Auburn and won't be surprised if he does. I do believe, very firmly, we're in a lot better shape today than we were when I started this thread almost two and a half weeks ago.

(I do find it interesting they were/are trying to make a last minute run at Ronnie Clark.)

bama alum I thought that was an interesting quote...

His recruitment took a turn when it came down to how he would fit in a defensive scheme. It always strikes me as odd when a staff says "we'll build our scheme around you" versus "this is how you'll fit and contribute with what we do."

<!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: dbtech_usertag_mention --> @Birdman37 <!-- END TEMPLATE: dbtech_usertag_mention --> You very well may be right.

When it comes to the 2014 recruiting classes, the recruitment of Tony Brown and Rashaan Evans have been the most interesting ones to follow for me.

Even if he does end up at Auburn, he appears to be a guy that's going to be a fun to watch play football.
On a side note: How many times, over the years, have people laughed at Auburn's Hot Board and the percentages they've given on landing recruits?

With that in mind:
Bryan Matthews' pick: 60%
Keith Niebuhr's pick: 60%

Now, a few hours later, I'm leaning towards taking a new stance.

You ask what, Birdman37 .

When you doubt, we expect.

JC Shurbertt says it's a lock for Auburn and that he would be VERY surprised if he went elsewhere on the Bill King show on Thursday, I think it was. I kind of shook my head at his certainty that it would go down like that after our guys were getting time with him so late. But just thought I would offer up that opinion into the story of Evans. I couldn't imagine how tough our defense would be with him, Foster, and DePreist in there, insert our line, and the possibility of a defensive backfield with Brown and Humphrey, and boy oh boy we'd be looking sharp.

BamaFan334 I don't pay a great deal of attention to JC Shurburtt. I'm not saying anything deragatory about him, he's just not someone I pay attention to that often.

I did happen to glance at his record this season on the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions. I did find it interesting he said Hampton, Tabor, Wallace, and Rudolph were all headed to Bama and they all went elsewhere.
ElephantStomp There was a comment this morning from a guy that's spot on when it comes to recruiting. All he said was he enjoyed the yearly tradition when Auburn loses one of the big recruits to Bama. Is he talking about Evans? I can't say...but it seemed that way to me.

The comment at Bird was a little dig at him...he's doubting Elam and Evans. And, he may be right. But, IF he isn't? We've a new tradition here at RTB...when he says no, it's a yes!!
