It always gets interesting this time of year.

Cueto has gone to KC, Papelbon to the Nats, Tulo to the Blue Jays.

The most mind boggling one though- Carls Gomez to the Mets for Zack Wheeler. There was an infielder as well, but I don;t recall who, I am hoping it was some young star prospect because this makes no sense to me if you are Milwaukee. They just traded Gomez, a young stud in the league, who has 2 years left on his contract, for Wheeler, an average pitcher who just had Tommy John's.... what the hell is that?

What other trades are out there? What are yall's beloved Bravos going to do?

Gomez to the Mets got axed because of a medical, supposedly surrounding Gomez's hip. The other player in that deal was Wilmer Flores, who is a decent hitting young IF prospect. Some thing he can play SS. I personally think he profiles better at 2B/3B. Flores was once a really highly touted prospect that kinda lost some shine the last couple of years. For Gomez, it wasn't actually a bad return for the Brewers. The Brewers have significant issues developing pitching, so getting Wheeler was not a bad deal. Plus they are out of it this year, so the TJS doesn't hurt their cause with Wheeler.

Hamels to the Rangers has been rumored for awhile, but it just doesn't make much sense to me. The Rangers aren't going to catch the Angels or Astros, so why trade for Hamels. They got lucky and were hot for a month, but outside of that, does anyone really think that team is a serious playoff contender? Now, Hamels is talented and under contract for a few more years, and they didn't have to give up either of their top two prospects to get him. If you think this move is a good deal based on the next two to three years, I'll agree with you. If you think it makes one iotas difference this year, you're living in a fantasy world.

Naturally Tulo to the Blue Jays was a big deal. Also, I thought the package the Rockies got was kinda light for Tulo. They actually took on more salary over the next couple of seasons. Hoffman should be a good pitcher some day, but the rest of that package was a grab bag in my opinion. Like the move from the Jays perspective though. Do they need more hitting? Nope, but you never turn down a chance to get one of the top 10 players in the league.

The most interesting move was that Dodgers, Braves, Marlins move.
  • Dodgers get Mat Latos, Alex Wood, Michael Morse, Jim Johnson, Luis Avilan, and Jose Peraza.
  • Marlins get three fairly average minor league pitchers.
  • Braves get Hector Oliviera, Paco Rodriguez, a minor league pitcher, and a competitive balance pick.
Clearly this is a salary dump by the Marlins. That's what the Marlins do. The Dodgers get two starting pitchers that can throw them innings in the postseason and two decent bullpen pieces. I will say that their bullpen hasn't been the issue though. Peraza will probably get flipped for someone else later. They have too many infielders now and have Corey Seager waiting in AAA. I love this deal from the Braves perspective though. Oliviera is a top prospect type that could probably hold his own as a ML 2B now. Paco is dominant against lefties when healthy as well. Sure you gave up Alex Wood, but they have a wealth of young starting pitching and anyone that's seen Wood throw before thinks that motion is bound to lead to injuries.

Cardinals get Brandon Moss from Indians for LHP Rob Kaminsky. Moss provides some 1B/OF depth, probably in a platoon with Mark Reynolds at 1B. Kaminsky is reasonably well thought of, but if a couple of years away from contributing at the ML level, and it's not like the Cards are short of pitching.

My favorite team is the Cubs. Unlike most years, there is now some excitement with the strong youth movement. Would love to see Price put on the Cubs jersey by 7/31, but I suspect he will be a Yankee at some point this season or by the start of next season.

Looks like my Cubs are content to let the other teams take the cream of the crop. Will be surprised if we make any significant moves today.
Thought I heard yesterday they may be willing to trade Castro. Mistake in my opinion because doesn't he still have 2 years left on his contract? They have good young talent.... no need to trade it all off like the braves

I haven't kept up with baseball as much this year as I have in the past. I've kept up with the Dodgers, but not much outside that.

I have no confidence in our team when it comes to clutch playoff time, and that starts with Don Mattingly. I feel like even if we win the division, we're doomed to get smoked by the Cardinals again in the NLCS.

Baseball Tonight last night hit the nail on the head RE: Castro. Nobody wants an error-prone, poor hitting, slow running shortstop. Cubs should've traded him 3 weeks into the season when he had a week with 2 game winning singles. His stock will never be that high the rest of this year.

Olivera is a power hitter, something the Braves desperately need. I think he slots at 3rd rather than 2nd. Age wise he is no spring chicken at age 30, hasn't played in a couple of years and has had hamstring issues.

Dan Morse's stock has crashed from a year ago. The Dodgers designated him for assignment, then flipped him to Pittsburg for a fringe outfield prospect.
