Gomez to the Mets got axed because of a medical, supposedly surrounding Gomez's hip. The other player in that deal was Wilmer Flores, who is a decent hitting young IF prospect. Some thing he can play SS. I personally think he profiles better at 2B/3B. Flores was once a really highly touted prospect that kinda lost some shine the last couple of years. For Gomez, it wasn't actually a bad return for the Brewers. The Brewers have significant issues developing pitching, so getting Wheeler was not a bad deal. Plus they are out of it this year, so the TJS doesn't hurt their cause with Wheeler.
Hamels to the Rangers has been rumored for awhile, but it just doesn't make much sense to me. The Rangers aren't going to catch the Angels or Astros, so why trade for Hamels. They got lucky and were hot for a month, but outside of that, does anyone really think that team is a serious playoff contender? Now, Hamels is talented and under contract for a few more years, and they didn't have to give up either of their top two prospects to get him. If you think this move is a good deal based on the next two to three years, I'll agree with you. If you think it makes one iotas difference this year, you're living in a fantasy world.
Naturally Tulo to the Blue Jays was a big deal. Also, I thought the package the Rockies got was kinda light for Tulo. They actually took on more salary over the next couple of seasons. Hoffman should be a good pitcher some day, but the rest of that package was a grab bag in my opinion. Like the move from the Jays perspective though. Do they need more hitting? Nope, but you never turn down a chance to get one of the top 10 players in the league.
The most interesting move was that Dodgers, Braves, Marlins move.
- Dodgers get Mat Latos, Alex Wood, Michael Morse, Jim Johnson, Luis Avilan, and Jose Peraza.
- Marlins get three fairly average minor league pitchers.
- Braves get Hector Oliviera, Paco Rodriguez, a minor league pitcher, and a competitive balance pick.
Clearly this is a salary dump by the Marlins. That's what the Marlins do. The Dodgers get two starting pitchers that can throw them innings in the postseason and two decent bullpen pieces. I will say that their bullpen hasn't been the issue though. Peraza will probably get flipped for someone else later. They have too many infielders now and have Corey Seager waiting in AAA. I love this deal from the Braves perspective though. Oliviera is a top prospect type that could probably hold his own as a ML 2B now. Paco is dominant against lefties when healthy as well. Sure you gave up Alex Wood, but they have a wealth of young starting pitching and anyone that's seen Wood throw before thinks that motion is bound to lead to injuries.
