With the recent announcements that Gunner Kiel was planning on playing at Indiana and today's announcement from Jameis Winston that he plans to head to Tallahassee it leaves Alabama without a QB commitment, so far, for the 2012 recruiting class.

One fact a lot haven't considered, or just didn't bother to think about, is having a top-tiered QB in this class wasn't going to be an easy pull. It was even more difficult when you have QB's looking at their choices. They all knew we have a battle going into fall camp with two QB's, both talented and highly sought after during their senior years in high school as well. That leaves any new QB looking at sitting for a few years in Tuscaloosa or having a good shot at earlier playing time elsewhere.

I don't have any doubt we'll still sign a QB in this class. I know the staff has been heavily recruiting a few while they were still pursuing Gunner and Jameis.

A few thoughts on the matter:

Great points and leads there Terry.

To be honest, Bama is playing from behind with respects to QBs, regardless. A commitment has to be ready to sit and wait years to play, or had better be better than the three ELITE 11 QBs that we already have in the system. If you're thinking NFL, its a sizable commitment to sit for 2-3 years before your first meaningful snap. Gunner will see at least three years of playing time at Indiana. JW, if the unthinkable happens and he does not get drafted high, will show up day one as the second best QB on campus and one snap away from three years starting himself.

Until AJ or Sims prove otherwise, which I'm hoping they will, the Alabama QB Formula is a heady, don't lose the game, guy. Croyle, Parker-Wilson, and McElroy; all successfull at Alabama, all NFL QBs, and all back ups.

Honestly, just give me a big D-lineman to fill the QB spot for this year. Sims and McCarron can battle this year and we are still sitting with Ely to redshirt this year and then Blake Sims as well. If we can't get something out of those 4 for the next 3-4 years then we have bigger issues that a high school recruit isn't fixing. Get back in the mix for a big time QB next year.

Greyson Lambert looks like a star on the rise. Terry, do you think he could be likely over the top of our board right now?

I've heard Alec, the guy committed to Wake Forest, is at the top of the board right now. Whether Grayson or Gardner is at #2 is probably a pretty fluid answer.

I looked at tape for both Alec Brown (the Wake commit) and Greyson, and my thoughts were that I was releived that we would be asking them to sit a few years first.

Brown struck me a as average, but with good size. In a nutshell he looked like he was realtively new to the position, as his mechanics looked a bit sloppy. This does not preclude him from being a heady kid who will be just what we are need in the Junior and Senior year, but before then I'd be nervous.

Greyson, in 5 minutes that I viewed, was flushed from the pocket one time. He seems to enjoy a good O-line, which may explain his tending to lock in on his #1 receiver. He was bad at this, and SEC QB will eat him alive if he can't check down. That's the point, in 5 minutes of tape I can't tell if he can scramble, move about the pocket, or work his WR progressions. His mechanics looked more polished then Browns, and he was more at ease.

In the end, I'm not inspired...but then again what do I know. I'll trust the guys with the offices in the Mal Moore building. RT!

A couple of things we'll call "on the other hand."

  • It's Morris, not Brown, but I'll assume you were looking at Morris's film.
  • It's film compiled from their sophomore and junior seasons. That's not an excuse, but it is something to keep in mind.
  • Both of these two kids have been in camp at Alabama. Our staff doesn't offer (written) a kid, even if he is one of the highest rated players in the nation unless they have a chance to work with him personally.
  • Lambert and Morris have done really well in the camps they've attended this summer. A lot doubted Lambert was back to even his junior form after his injury. But, after personal evaluations, the staff is very comfortable with him.
  • Morris is a kid that snuck up on me, and others from what I could tell. I'd heard his name after the "junior's circuit of camps" last season but didn't think he was that high on our board until told differently, recently.
  • I've yet to see any film, from a QB especially, that inspired me. I'm not saying that as something to "call you out" LBS. But, I am going to throw this question to you and the group. What QB film have you ever seen that was inspiring? (underlined so it would catch everyone's eyes.)
  • There is so little difference in the first place and last place QB in the Elite 11 camps it makes the three ratings/rankings the kids get almost useless.
Just as a side note. There has been on set of film on a kid we've got a verbal for that impressed me this year. That was Reuben's. And, he's in the 2013 class.

Thanks for the follow up Terry. (and yes, I was was writing of Morris. Sorry.)

To answer the question, Jameis Winston was impressive is most every aspect with the exception of the deep ball, oddly. In fact what is most striking to me was that I thought his tape showed him to be a better passer than Gunner Kiel. (just one poster's opinion.)

Another that honestly inspired me was GMac's. His was the first that ever immediately rewatched to see if I saw what I thought I saw. I don't think I saw him make a single mistake...just limited by not having a cannon of an arm.

hmm, so Alec Morris it is.

Just looked and he is from Allen, TX that high school I wanna say PsychoJoe (if memory serves me) posted about a while ago that was putting in the $60m stadium...

might actually go watch him play a game now. that town is diff than most cities, they are single high school - 100k people in allen, tx, there are probably 5-6k at that high school, seriously HUGE school, especially by texas standards.

Interesting you say that. Here's a quote from an interview with Morris.
On his trip, Morris received rave reviews from all of the coaches, including Nick Saban.

"We met at his office, and he said they were interested in me because one of my strong points is that I don't have any flaws, and I have great mechanics," Morris said. "A lot of that is because of my quarterback coach, Kevin Murray, who I've worked with for over a year. He's awesome. He's got me to this point, and I couldn't thank him enough."
