🏈 QB Competition

Is there any reason to think that Phillip won't come out for the entire game against North Texas? This may be a luxury that CNS has (i.e. getting his "back up" significant playing time while giving his "starter" two weeks to prepare for the start of SEC play in a game against a division rival)?
 
I would still expect to see Sims in the next game. I think going with A.J. and sticking with him was the right call yesterday, but I would suspect Saban would like to see more from Sims. I wouldn't doubt we see Sims in the next game.

IMHO, I would have to go with McCarron at this point. Obviously, I'm not the coach, but that's just what I would do.

On another note......what did you guys think about that first McCarron TD pass? That had NFL throw written all over it. Squeezing it in between 3 defenders is pretty amazing. Really shows you his arm strength.
 
I think AJ played great yesterday. He was very poised and really nailed some tough passes. He was a cool cucumber under a heavy rush at times and never seemed to let the crowd rattle him. I notice CNS and crew did not play many youngsters in this game at all. I think they did that on purpose because of the road game in a huge stadium against a traditional power team.

I do think, however, that CNS mentioned that the QB competition is not over. I think that AJ has earned the right to start and I would start him, but it sounds like CNS is going to keep his options open. I expect to see both of them playing againt North Texas and maybe even Sims getting the start. I don't think this is good for the team, but whatever...

I'm not so sure. Yes, It was a bullet that threaded a needle, but it was good only because it resulted in a touchdown. TR was open underneath and was a much safer option. AJ didn't have to make a play at that point, so forcing it not the smart decision.

To me, AJ's abilities have never been in question (Phillip's either), but the only concern that I have with AJ is that I believe that his confidence in his arm is greater than his decision making. He's always had a better arm than GMac, but AJ rode the bench behind GMac because good decision making was better than arm strength.

That said, AJ is making noticable improvement in being the heady QB that he is asked to be.

I get what you're saying. I purposely left out the part where I was supposed to say....."might have been a poor decision, but he got away with it in the end".

Yeah, totally should not have thrown that pass to be completely honest, I agree. But again, the focus for me in the post was his arm strength, not decision-making. Probably the wrong read/decision....but a hell of a throw. That's the kind of throw you don't normally see at this level.

That is the nagging part of the game for me. That throw, the one to Maze and several others would likely have been incompletions, or worse, against a good SEC secondary. Had they been incompletions Saturday, we would have kept pressing and won the game, but INT's against say, LSU, could put us in a hole.

The kid has a cannon arm and he is accurate with it. The problem is that it has been a while since Alabama has seen a QB who can make these throws. All those times that you/I were yelling at the tv for McElroy throw it the last two years.....This kid will throw it. And make the throw. Sure, sometimes it will bite us, but more often than not, he will complete the pass. As far as him playing against an SEC defense goes....He does it every week against the best defensive backfield in the country.
 
Most of our opinions about Sims are based on one game. If I remember correctly most opinions, including mine, favored Sims at QB after the one spring game we saw, so I think we still need to wait and see. I must say that so far I an very comfortable with AJ at QB.
 
A J (and Phillip as well) both have great arms and confidence that they can get the ball in there against any coverage. That kind of confidence can be dangerous (as in a pick) but it is also what makes these guys the players that they are. Hopefully experience will tone this down a little.
