Please say a little prayer today for all of the teachers and students that have started back to school this week!! Year 20 at my particular school started today and my 500+ little ones!!
I taught 5 1/2 years at a HS just north of Birmingham after I finished at UA. I’ll finish my career in 3 years though. I have a sophomore and a junior at our HS and the day my baby girl graduates, I will walk with her.
My grandfather was retired Navy. I miss him everyday!! He was a Chief Petty Officer at the time of his retirement. @planomateo I appreciate the well wishes! I pray each morning to make a positive impact on at least one kid. I pray to keep this school and these little ones safe.
The teaching profession is definitely a "calling". I was a business major when I started at UA but quickly switched when I gave up playing football. I wanted to stay involved with athletics and I thought it was either become a teacher and coach or go into sports medicine. I wanted to have that day in and day out interaction with talking ball so I knew sports medicine wasn't my route. I came home and told my parents, both of whom were teachers. Dad said that you got to "love what you do" and mom said "you aren't going to make any money!" Funny thing is now, I will have been out of coaching longer that I have been in it really soon. After starting off in the HS ranks, I couldn't go back now and I wouldn't go back. I'd rather play all day!!!
@alabama mike will agree that teaching is a calling much like preaching. It takes someone that is simply "wired" different. I've worked with some that were great people and great teachers. They worked for 30+ years. I've worked with others that were out within 5 years. They couldn't handle the demands or the lifestyle that it takes. You have to be selfless!! Teachers need more support. Now, you see a lot that are getting out at 20 years, not waiting to get to 25 or willing to work 30+ years anymore, due to the lack of support.
When I speak in churches, I always start off by telling the congregation that I am a missionary in the public school. It is a calling! I love the kids and the interactions I have with them on a daily basis. Many, as you well know come from horrendous situations. Hopefully, I can leave a smile, a simple hello, high five, fist bump or my time and make a difference. When I cant do that, its time to go.
