🏈 POST GAME/VENT THREAD: Bama 33 — West Virginia 23

I've watched the game three times and yes, there were several good things and all in all several players played great.

For all the worry about big Cam playing on the left there was no need to worry, he played great.

I was certain we had more than one WR, but Coop had a hell of a game.

Sims played well for the most part, but he isn't real accurate when he's on the move, but there were a few times he made big plays to get us out of trouble. His best play was the third down pass he made with his feet in the end zone.

I still don't believe he's the answer at QB if we want to win the NC.

And there's got to be a better answer at CB than Sylve.

Somebody please answer me how that tool Herbstreit doesn't have us in his top 5, but has FSU?

If I had to guess, FSU is there because of their schedule... I haven't watched what you are referring to but I do know that he is going to be updating his top 4 every week for ESPN.

Didn't know that when I posted it.. Looks like if you punch it a second time, it will take you where I intended. In any event, I feel better after watching the game a second time. Still hope we have an alternative to Sylve. It is early in the season. RTR!!!!!!!!!

I can't recall how he worded his tweet.

He mentioned last week that he'd been asked to do a top four each week, and his rankings would be based on that week. In other words, he's not looking at the team as a whole, just what happened in week one—largely the reason he has UGA where they are.

Wow, just getting a chance to check in following the game and spending a couple of days at the lake dragging kids around with the boat. It's probably best I wasn't here to answer some of the posts. We had a bad tackle at the 8 yard line, IIRC, that threw off the KO pursuit and allowed a KO return. Otherwise, we probably win by a larger margin, particularly if Christion Jones hauls in what should have been a pass completion of well more than 15 yards.

I'll be brief. The good: Blake Sims makes our OL pass blocking look better and he extends a play better than any QB we've had in some time. His reverse out from an imminent sack looked like David Palmer against ut. He then had the presence to know where the receiver was and complete the pass. At least twice AJ would've been in a fetal position, taking a sack (no negative intent, just the truth). Our running game is great, and our kicking game is in midseason form. Run D is stout.

The bad: Sylve has to get his head around, but he was beaten with some very good passes, particularly the TD. Sims must be more accurate on crossing routes and throwing on the run. It may simply be the nature of trying to get in position against the HUNH, but we still seem lost. I'm not sure Depriest is the answer in terms of being the brain trust out there, but he was missed for sure.

That's all for now. I believe any view of a single digit season are unfounded.

Tim

Everyone has a huge hard-on for FSU anymore .. Despite the fact that they struggled against Oklahoma State as much as we struggled against WVU .. despite the fact that they are the defending champs and struggled like that. Meh.

Maybe this will give our guys extra reason to fight. To prove themselves. The last year it was given to them, the hype, the overrated-ness, the dynasty talk, etc. Now they have to fight.

Well one thing Reuben struggled mightily in pass defense, not just man but in zone coverage. With Trey in there alot of those passes in the middle DO NOT happen.

After a couple of days to let it sink in... Overall, there is a lot of positive.
First, we have a lot of guys making their first start and against the kind of offense that has given us fits. I think the positive is how, as the game progressed, we responded and began to play better. Defensively, we stuffed the run and the LBs began to make better reads, or at least weren't as lost as at the beginning of the game. As for the secondary, Sylve's position needs to be evaluated as he was burned time and time again. I think with the competition coming up in the next two games, we can get a couple of freshmen some game experience there. Improvement should come with experience across the board.
Offensively, the line still needs improvement, but that should come with more experience. QB started slow, missing some big opportunities, but improved. Sims' ability to avoid the rush was a plus (a big plus) but he has to make the throw (accurately) when he finds the open guy. Bringing him along with the short passing game was the right call. Obviously, that has to improve as the competition will definitely get better. I would have liked to see what Coker could do, but I guess the game was too close to mess with the flow of the offense, 538 balanced yards ain't bad.

To the point of many, if we don't improve, yes it will be a long season. But, why would we not expect to improve with each game? Of course we'll improve!
And remember, we played a sloppy game against on offense that has given us fits, and WE STILL WON BY DOUBLE-DIGITS.

I remember thinking that we were in trouble last year after the OL laid an egg in the opener against Va Tech.
Improvement will come and the Tide will ROLL!!!

ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

Agree. Best thing really. As the cliche goes, "The wolf climbing the hill is always hungrier than the one on top". It's high time we were put back into the "climbing" position, and thus in the mindset of "earning" and not "expecting", as perhaps Coach Saban might say, if I may be so bold.

@silvermetalflake .... It's ironic that a lot of your argument is based on team unity. It's the one thing that Coach Saban has stressed over and over during this camp and early season has improved and he is very happy where we are at with team "unity". There may have been some shortcomings on Saturday but I don't think unity is one of them. The coach should know.

Totally agree. Unity is everything; well almost everything. Beer. But what I saw Saturday wasn't an emotional unity problem per se but rather, as it seemed to me, the WV offence at times had our D scrambling around pre-snap like a buncha pigeons after a sudden tossing of breadcrumbs off a park bench. In short... we gotta get those pigeons orgnized!!! :neener_neener:

#33 is back in the middle next week which will help organize those "pigeons" as will Landon Collins continue to settle into that Rashad Johnson/Mark Barron/Haha Dix role in the back end.
