I know about as much of the maths as she does.

I didn't know as to the "standard" other than mine until I asked a bartender at Texas Roadhouse I just ran into...she said 20 for good. She also said 15 is her minimum.

What's crazy is those places that have the "predetermined" tip amounts on the touch screen where you pay. But if you do the math, their 18% or 20% is more like almost 50%. That's why you should always, ALWAYS, choose "custom amount" and put in your own number.

I start at 20 and go up or down based on quality. I believe people should be rewarded for great service same as I believe you should let them know they're in the wrong profession.

One of these wild coincidences in my life. Yesterday I called a friend and mentioned us getting together for something to eat. His wife works across the parking lot at the T-Mobile call center so the thought was the Texas Roadhouse. (It's not. It's a Longhorns, but the story continues...)

I had this wild ass thought their other week about their steak tips and garlic mashed potatoes. It's been years. And then I run into her this afternoon at the 7-11. I'll eat at the bar. It'll be more than 20.

I start there as well. The only difference between what she said is I'll go as low as 10 if the service pisses me off. And that has to be pretty bad because I'm never in a real big hurry. I'm there to eat and relax a bit.

A couple of weeks ago I went 40 and it had nothing to do with the food (already knew it was going to be good) or the server. It was the outside patio and the people we watched that afternoon. While she didn't say much, I saw her always watching.

That is service ... being left alone.
