šŸˆ OT: This will be awesome (winter storms) if it happens (Attention Gulf Coasters)

I am a bit of a weather geek and I have been tracking a system that looks to move along the Gulf Coast and possibly deposit a HISTORIC amount of snow on the white, sandy beaches. This is the latest run of the NAM (North American Model):

Here is another view:

We are talking half a foot of snow for places like Mobile, New Orleans and Pensacola. About 8 inches toward Daphne and up to a foot in Dothan. Further south and East, Panama City, Destin and Tallahassee may be dealing with a lot of ICE! This would be the Gulf Coast 100 years storm if it were to occur as modeled.

This is still several days away and a lot can change but this would be awesome for folks that hardly ever get to see snow.

The last time that I can remember that we had snow this far south was back around '74 or so. It only lasted a day or two but at it was only a few inches.
Too bad something like this couldn't happen around Christmas, then we could have had a white Christmas. If this does happen I will have to break out the camera for sure.

Didn't the snow storm in March 1993 bring snow to the beaches? I know we got 18" in Birmingham, I seem to remember the beaches got several inches.

I really hope the deep south gets some snow so the kids that haven't seen it live will get to see how pretty it is falling. Everyone just needs to be very careful if you MUST get out.

We received 4 inches last Monday night, had flurries and below zero weather several nights and yesterday had another 5-6 inches to fall. 7 degrees this morning here but today is suppose to be our first day above freezing in a couple of weeks. It's back in the deep freeze tomorrow evening.

This is the truth. Everyone around here is used to driving thru the rain but snow is a different kind of beast. A few years ago when I had to drive to T-Town for the BBQ cook off event in February, that was the day it snowed thru most of Alabama. I got about an hour north of here before I saw the snow. On the way up I lost track of how many cars were either in the median getting towed or waiting on a tow truck. A rule of thumb that I go by is to drive under the speed limit if it is raining. Well that day I was driving slower than that.

After the 12z suite of models, anything is still in play but if I were in south Alabama, I would be getting ready for something historic. One of the models is showing a MAJOR sleet storm for Mobile as well.

Columbus, GA? It won't take much of a shift NW to put you in a good snow zone. The models always assume 10:1 ratios when looking at snow totals. Even if you were to get a measly .10 to .25 of QPF and with the arctic air in place, you could easily squeeze out 20:1 ratios (2 to 5 inches).

Folks in the I-20 corridor better not let their guard down either. While all the models keep the precip field mainly south and east, there has been a tendancy for these things to shift further N/W. It won't take much of a shift for good snows to find their way into Birmingham to ATL in this setup. Unfortunately, I may be too far north.

The latest run of the NAM. Notice the shift NW since last night.

Also note. the model represented above assumes nothing but 10:1 ratios. With the aforementioned cold air in place, 20:1 ratios are in play and also some ratios up to 25:1 would come into play especially on the northern fringe of the precip field. That's the light, fluffy, Colorado-type snow. You just don't see that much in the south.

Pretty hell, come up and visit me in Michigan. We are getting hit right now. I have about 2 feet in my yard. Naw, I still think it's pretty when it's not a freakin' blizzard.

bamaledge LOL you have to remember that you and I see our share of snow, you especially in Michigan. Snow, that far south is very rare and many kids have never seen snow actually fall except what they have seen on TV. I know we get up, go to work, drive in it and shop without too much thought bc we are accustomed to the snow. Even though I have lived in Ohio for almost 25 years, I still love to watch it snow. The really cold temps and wind chill I can do without. Be safe. RTR! :icon_thumright:

Moved this here because a lot will be dealing with weather and likely stuck at home...

So, just to make this sports related: it's supposed to be 18 degrees colder in ATL today than it will be in Sochi.

IF you haven't noticed yet, bamafan4ever is channeling Jim Cantore.

Sochi has a subtropical climate. Still baffles my mind as to how they are hosting a WINTER Olympics there. It has palm trees! Average January and February temperatures there are 50 ..

Had no idea it could snow down on the Gulf Coast. We've had a solid foot or so of snow for the past month .. Currently in another polar vortex .. Damn North .. :dazed:

I second that.
Snow SUCKS.
The ONLY time I ever wanna see it is when I open my freezer for a steak. But unlike you lucky US citizens, who have the option to get away from it and move to Vegas, Florida, or somewhere where humans are meant to live, we Canadians are forced to bend over for it and take hard every year. I shoulda married American. LOL.
And WHY any American would choose to live in arctic regions like Michigan or Wisconsin :icon_scratch: when they could be rolling in warmth in Vegas or Tampa is beyond me.
