Went to work Tuesday to vacant home I am renovating in Mount Laurel. Roads were quickly closed down so I had to walk from Mt Laurel to Inverness to my Dads house (7 miles). Made it to my kids finally last night, Riverchase was a nightmare with car pile ups that are still blocking our subdivision access. Ill never look at Dustings the same :no-no:

My friend in B'ham lives in Inverness. He had to walk from 459 to hwy 31 at the top of Shades Crest to his Sister in laws home. What a story you guys have been through. They said it looked like a scene out of The living dead.

Almost everything is already melted away here. My truck was entirely cased in ice, it was crazy.

Wow, that's up and over Double Oak Mountain, a nice hike when it's not forced.

It was a steep mountain but at least my walk was (down) it. Would of been better had I been prepared for it with the right clothes. I saw 4 wrecks happen and at least 20 wrecked cars and trucks on my trek, some totaled.
Hwy 41 and 280 was a car graveyard, hundreds of abandoned and trashed cars.

Was forced into getting out today. Lost control of my car a couple times but was lucky enough to regain control before careening into anything...although I came scarily close. If you're in B-ham and you still don't need to get out...do yourself a favor and DON'T

I've lived in the Baltimore, MD area since 1985 and I've lived in Boston, MA, but I grew up in Alabama. I've seen both sides of the winter weather debate. I have several things to say: (1) the south doesn't have the salt trucks or the snow plows needed to address road conditions that involve winter precipitation; (2) nobody, anywhere, drives well on ice; (3) people who are predisposed to criticize will do so whenever the opportunity permits.

It seems, from my southern perspective, that all the northerners always feel that they have all the answers for all of us inbreed, sister humping, toothless rednecks.

There have been many, such as yourself, who have come to our defense, however it seem that most northerners would rather use southerners as the butt of their jokes as opposed to being honest. Fact is unless you are driving a Zamboni, you're SOL on ice.

I had so many friends from Boston and Chicago making fun of the south. I kept telling them, yeah, let's see YOUR cities deal with all of this with little to no budget, 2 snow plows, and pure ice everywhere. I was poking fun at some of you guys but I completely get where you are coming from ..

Hell, I was just jealous you guys got off school/work. Deservedly so, of course, but I had a hell of a time getting to work in 3-4 inches the other day and I really wish the county would have the decency to keep the safety of commuters and children in mind when planning whether or not to close down .. Funny thing is, Philly has a crap ton of plows and budget, they just never use it when they need it lol. Northeast Philly NEVER gets plowed and it's a mess of narrow streets packed with cars.

This winter has been hell. Sub zero temps, polar vortexes, blizzards .. I am moving down south ASAP :snoopyhouse:

I thought of comparing our preparedness of hurricanes to snow preparedness and the hurricane Sandy stuff, but I'm sure folks would think I was being heartless and insensitive. I'm also sure someone would bring up Katrina from 2005 as well. Lot of stuff goes into comparing apples and oranges like that. Bottom line is Florida and most of the south are prepared for hurricanes about like the north is for snow or California is for earthquakes. It is all relative, but in times of disaster we southerners do not feel the need to mock those in time of need. Thanks for defending your future home. :tennis:

Precisely! When the 5.6 quake hit the Mid-Atlantic, the entire West coast mocked us for evacuating and cancelling school/work. Our buildings aren't built to sustain them, so of course we are gonna freak out!

I love the south, and despite my Yankee upbringing (though my daddy was born in Georgia), I will defend it to the end! :bluebiggrin:

I grew up in north Alabama and have lived in Ohio for 24 1/2 years. The biggest difference that I see is that in the north, roads are treated b4 and after snow. In the south, roads are not treated b4 or after bc most places in the south do not have snow plows or very few.

Growing up, we would get some snow but mainly ice. Here, we get some ice but mainly snow. I dont care who you are, where you live or what you drive, you are not going to be able to travel in ice. Ice is a different creature altogether. People can drive in snow if they slow down, give other drivers plenty of room and leave plenty of room to stop.

The news channels up here have been leading the newscasts with the snow and traffic jams in the south. I understand and am not making fun of anyone.

Philly is a great city with a lot of history, however Mobile AL is one of the best places in the south to live. Water Water everywhere and we do not work after 2:00 PM on Friday.
