šŸˆ OT: Student/Faculty org. demanding changes with UA Administration (monies, groups, diversity, etc.)

"among top-tier state and private universities, the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa reported the highest percentage of black faculty"

It’s 2015. Where are all the black college faculty?
I say it just doesn't matter what percentage of a student population is any race. we are the melting pot of the world and if you claim a percentage is white, black, or hispanic, etc. it is not accurate because it is based on a form that is filled out with a check mark. What about people that are mixed or two generations mixed again. They just usually choose one or the other. It is like saying a mixed breed dog doesn't count, when we all know some of them are just as good as purebreed. We are 4 generations away from any kind of unequal rights for anyone. The PC Police can KMFA. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Yeah. You can't just say KMFA and that's the end of it. Doesn't work like that, but this list of demands seems like a smoke screen for something else. What? I don't know but none of this makes sense. It seems like the majority of it leads to segregation. Here's my thing, just because you pay your tuition you think you're entitled to something more than an education? Where is this funding going to come from? I love the university of Alabama and all of it's sports BUT if they even think about giving in to these nut jobs I would not support anything to do with the university with my hard earned money and I would hope more would do the same and see where they land. I have a lot of black friends and everyone, black, white and varying shades of tan have all enjoyed each others company and hardly any of them want to be given anything they didn't earn. I am just saddened by this list of demands, makes no sense.

@It Takes Eleven and @Mr. Pink

I'm not saying a hard and fast number, but shouldn't the state supported institutions strive to represent the state? You can't say "we can only hire a black educator in order to make our goal" but you should try to be close. I know that students need to be qualified and educators need to want to be here, but you also can't say, "we could only find white people who want to teach here."

The protesters at Missouri are pulling a number out of their asses to establish how many black educators should be hired. At least have a justification.

What is the Machine? Is this something like the Skull and Crossbones? If so, then let the ones bitching bring the money honey to the table. This country runs on follow the money. They can complain and bitch but it will go nowhere if it doesn't have substance.

I am laughing, so I won't get angry. I am an Asian indian 1st Gen immigrant. Came to the states when I was 5. It is disgusting how these people want this and that. Getting an education from Alabama is a privilege. I have my diplomas and life experiences from Alabama that's all I need or deserve. Funny how they just talk about black folks in there demands mainly, hmm. If you are done, well bye. Wonder if the white kids at Tuskegee and Al State have a list of demands, doubtful.

Not if there aren't 10% worth of qualified candidates that want the positions. You can't just stick a minority in a position for the sake of having a minority there for a "quota"... they need the same qualifications as any other professor or staff member.

That's like saying the black population makes up about 25% of Earths population but only 3% of people that have traveled to space are black.... you want to just strap a bunch of unqualified and untrained black folks in rockets and launch them to the moon to make the quota?

Otoh, the moon sounds like a good candidate for a "safe space."

I'm not a fan of #7 because it requires more "rubbish" required courses, but it today's environment, it wouldn't surprise me if it was enacted. Like most, I don't understand #9. Sounds like reinstituting segregation. Do students of color currently feel threatened in the student center? I guess I could see where they're coming from if that's the case, but I'm not there, so I don't know. #10 seems difficult to do, especially since Alabama is apparently already #1 among top publics and privates in that area. If the demand was 10% minorities, that seems much more achievable because you can include Asian, Indian, and Hispanic faculty. Alabama may already be at 10% or higher if you include those, however.

The rest of the "demands" don't seem that big of a deal. Again, though, no one is forcing anyone to go to school there.

What the heck is that inside the O? Looks like a dogbone or bowtie.

OK @AFF What in the Fk is the Machine. Is it a secret? I really really don't know what it is. I was a member of the original Jaycees. Is it something like that? I am also a member of a secret Mardi Gras society. Is it something like that? Been thinking about joining the Illuminati. Is it something like that? Please tell me.

Roughly, the machine is an alliance of the sororities and fraternities on campus.

Some of you may remember the old cartoonist, Al Capp, who drew the 'Lil Abner ' comic strip. Al was quite the political satirist in his day, and he made fun of a lot of institutions of his day from the comics page. When the campus protests began in the sixties he came up with the SWINE organization. The acronym represented "Students Wildly Indignant about Nearly Everything.' It seems that this organization has reformed.

Capp got escorted off Alabama campus for trying to do something with some female students. Not clear to me what he did though I assume it was something sexually motivated. Anyone know the story behind that?

Update;

I found this. Apparently Capp had a problem keeping it in his pants on several occasions including with a young Goldie Hawn...interesting.

No doubt that the Machine is real. In all of the student government elections, you would have "GDIs" running against Machine backed candidates. Money talks and the lowly independents stood no chance.
