🏈 OT: Is the turn-around at OU Stoops following Sumlin's "road to success?"

There's a story developing here, in my opinion.

We all know how smug Stoops comes across when he's talking to the media and booster organizations for OU. I'm sure that doesn't come as a shock to a lot of people. After all, we saw that attitude in its infancy during his time with Spurrier (who, in my belief, fostered what we see in Stoops today.)

Jon Solomon and Bonnie Bernstein have been covering OU this past few weeks and had a few interesting tweets yesterday.

This isn't the first time, or the last I'm guessing, we see evidence of Mayfield "talking." Chalk this up to QB confidence, arrogance, whatever moniker you want to use but there's no denying he carries himself in his own special way (images of Al Bundy with his hands down his pants come to mind.) Putting it mildly, seeing that kind of behavior from a starting QB, under a head coach like Stoops, raises red flags with me.

Enter Kyler Murray.

We're watching the implosion in College Station right now. It's my belief that all stems back to one Johnny Manziel and how Sumlin let him "do his own thing" without thought of what consequence may come.

You've seen reports about Murray and his father clashing with Sumlin over QB decisions made at A&M.

How are the two situations different from each other? I see Stoops coddling Maysfield. I saw Sumlin doing the same with his QB's.

We're seeing how that ended with Sumlin at A&M. Now, seeing this story about Maysfield, Patterson, Stoops, et al I can't help but suspect we're going to see the same thing at OU in the next season or two.

Clutter. Makes me laugh hard, the media was running the whole TCU hung Mayfield out to dray nonsense and Gary Patterson addressed it about as head on as you can while pulling Mayfield's old man into the mix. Seems to me that Mayfield should have left this chip on his shoulder and not shared it with the world. He had a chance to win the starting job at Tech and didn't...he started out fast (like Kenny Hill) and didn't find a way to maintain that into the 2013 season.

Interesting connection you've drawn @TerryP, Stoops dealing with Mayfields dad and then dealing with Murray's dad. Stoops gonna have his hands full. Perhaps this was something Stoops taught Sumlin back in the day. Prior to his stint as the Houston HC, Sumlin was at OU.

Believe Mayfield is still fighting for an additional year of eligibility, if not, he's a Senior next year. So there shouldn't be much of a controversy with Murray as he'll have to sit next year, so it lines up perfectly.

The OU@TCU just got more interesting in 2016.

Baker Mayfield after throwing an INT against Kansas State in 2013 didn't want to tackle the guy.

I'm not really sure why the TAMU program is getting bashed so much. They were undefeated coming into the game against us having beaten what now is obviously a pretty good Arky team and a MSU team that was competitive. They moved the ball through the air on us as good as anyone we played. Kyle Allen was on the money for most of the game even though he had some picks. They asked him to throw 45 times and they put nearly 300 yards on us through the air. They played a close game with LSU at the end of the season.

IMO they are a great running back and a 3-4 better players on defense from being in contention. Their offense was ok for most of the year. If they balanced it out a bit with the run and stop the run a little better they would have had maybe 1-2 losses this season.

Manziel obviously played charades a bit with making their team/program look better than it really was. Kudos to him for that even though he's a public disgrace to all.

Agree. Sumlin brought in a new RB coach and a new DC to address these areas.

They are missing an offensive line too, which Manziel was the benefactor of.
