šŸˆ OT: Dad blames himself, FSU for not supervising Winston

Winston's father says he, FSU 'dropped the ball' on supervision

Jameis Winston's recent citation for shoplifting crab legs at a Tallahassee Publix may be a minor black eye for the reigning Heisman Trophy winner in the long run, but Winston's father told USA Today he's taking it seriously -- and that he and the school need to do a better job of keeping the Seminoles superstar out of trouble.

"We hope so," Antonor Winston said when asked if Winston would learn from the incident. "Not only him. I think it should show the university and us, I think we probably kind of dropped the ball on that a little bit."

"He's supposed to have somebody around him 24/7," Antonor Winston said. "He a Heisman Trophy winner so [he's] definitely not supposed to be by [himself].

To be fair to Florida State , 24/7 surveillance seems a bit extreme for any 20-year-old college student, even one as famous -- and, arguably, trouble-prone -- as Winston. Seminoles athletic director Stan Wilcox did tell USA Today that the school is "committed to doing everything in our power within NCAA rules" to support Winston, and that additional security measures have been taken for Winston's road baseball trips and other athletic activities.

In the end, with the rape allegations against him ending without charges and the crab leg theft highly likely to not result in a football suspension, Winston's on-field career isn't likely to see any setbacks from his off-field image issues -- and despite his school's and his father's best intentions, it will be up to him to make sure that remains the case.

Go ahead, call me a cynic.

Now that we've got that out of the way...

Here we have a guy who openly bragged about turning the TV up when coaches were on their in-home visits—an act he boastfully thought was funny. Reality says, openly disrespectful to a visitor in your home.

"He's supposed to have someone around him 24/7?" Seriously? Setting aside the absolute insanity that leads a father to think a kid of Jameis' age needs 24/7 supervision, where and from whom did he get that impression?

Boy, this is rich. Father fails to instill integrity in his kid, so he now thinks Florida State University is supposed to make up for his failures as a parent? Ha, this is exactly where society is at and headed even worse, blame others instead of taking personal responsibility. He says he blames himself yet adds the tidbit that it was the school's fault in order to take the blame completely off him. This idiot is all about the money and doesn't give a hoot what happens as long as his son makes it to the draft. The fact someone made the comment about him during recruiting shoes he's a complete fool.

Bryant had two bad boys in the sixties (Hint, both were QBs). No excuses from parents. They had to man up and take their punishment.

I grant that the football players lived in the athletic dorm then, which made it easier to keep up with them.

As some of you know, I worked with his mom for years, and she is a class act. Dad apparently has made him think he doesn't have to follow the same rules everyone else does. You guys are spot on. If at age 20 he needs someone watching him 24/7, that does not bode well for his future.

Sorry, dude. You're just making excuses now. When a kid goes away to college, he/she stands on their own. It's when the true and real self begins to appear. Jameis' problem is Jameis.

Well, kids need to learn this shit on their own. I'm not saying that it isn't the fathers fault somewhat, because kids need a father figure in their life and someone to give them some tough love every once in a while, but the guy is his own person and should be able to know what is right from wrong. Unless he's a barner, which in that case, we can only do as much as possible to help them learn, but probably won't get much progress.
