šŸˆ Ole Miss WR predicting upset?

Highly-touted Ole Miss freshman wide receiver Laquon Treadwell isn’t scared about his team’s trip to Alabama this weekend. If anything, he likes the Rebels’ chances against the top-ranked Crimson Tide.

Stay tune Upset — Laquon Treadwell (@SuccessfulQuon) September 23, 2013

It’s not quite a guaranteed upset, but it certainly implies one.

And Treadwell isn’t the only Ole Miss player that’s short on confidence in advance of the game. ā€œI think we have better receivers than A&M,ā€ QB Bo Wallace told Michael Casagrande of AL.com. ā€œThey want to talk about Mike Evans being so good, but we have Donte (Moncrief) and I think Laquon (Treadwell) is going to be that way. We have better players on the outside than A&M does. … Yeah, I think we can put points on [Alabama]. I think we can put points on anybody.ā€

We’ll find out Saturday if Treadwell’s and Wallace’s words have merit to them.

This game reminds me a lot of the S. Carolina game in 2010. Thank goodness this one is at home though. But still, we often play better on the road. I'm hoping for very different results, but it reminds me of that game.

Hrrmm, UofSC, eh?

A&M and this game both remind me of contests with Arkansas—this weekends game UArk 2011.

That could be an accurate, analogous situation and going on that logic, let's just hope that the 2010 Arkansas game was not our 2013 ATM game.:icon_eek:

Why not, BB? Both wins. Both times the game revolved around INT's. Only difference between A&M and UArk ('10) was offensive production.

I'm concerned about our general malaise so far this season like everyone else and the fact that we have yet to put together a great game in all three phases yet, HOWEVER, it is very dangerous to show disregard and a lack of respect for a sleeping giant and that is exactly what it sounds like over there in Oxford.

On the flip side:

What has Ole Miss done to garner this respect you speak of?

A win over a hapless Texas squad?

One top ten recruiting class?

If we look at who Ole Miss has beaten we see a 1-4 record against ranked teams with the lone win against a Mississippi State team (24/25) last season. Is it safe to say this respect spoken of hasn't been earned?

A win over Vandy who hasn't won a conference game this season? (Let's not forget that was a last minute win over the 'Dores.)

Seriously. What?

My point is we probably shouldn't have won at Fayettnam; like 2013 ATM we put ourselves in a hole early. That game turned out to be a fortuitous piece of the total body of evidence for the 2010 season. As we would go on to lay an egg in Columbia, which was one of the top wins in that school's history much like a win for Ole Miss would be on Saturday. History does not exactly repeat itself, but I do not want to tempt fate by getting in a hole early, again.

Bama maybe shouldn't have won at Arkansas in 2010, but the A and M win this year WAS WON. Bama is better than the Aggies. The score could have and should have been worse. So, it's not a question of talent or teams when using TAM as a measuring stick or analogy. The South Carolina game in 2010 was completely different. I feel like South Carolina was better in that year than A and M is this year, but only time will tell. That's just my thinking right now. It seems like right now there were better teams, or at least teams that stacked up better against the Tide, in 2010. I don't see as many good teams this year. My thoughts, but I'm not impressed with too many teams this year. If Bama keeps getting better, they can win them all this year. If not, I still say they could lose three games this season. Not this Saturday though.

Much like the A&M game a few weeks ago when we were down by 14 I can't see me getting worried if we were down by 14 to Ole Miss. (Frankly, I think A&M handles a lead better than Ole Miss would be able to given the entire story.)

Personally, I can't say "lay an egg in Cola" due to a few reasons: two being the injuries we were dealing with and the phenomenal game Garcia played that year.

Can Bo put up similar results as Garcia? Given the perfect situation, probably so.

I see people pointing to games we've lost in the past and saying "remember that when thinking about Saturday." I could try to but there are so, so many things that would have to follow the same script.

  • Wallace having the same game as Garcia.
  • A lot of our players get injured today or tomorrow.
  • We tie / lose the turnover battle.
  • We're held to under 140 yards rushing.

I could get a lot further into the numbers but I'll close with this thought.

As admitted here on many occasion I play several games a week. When we played on the road, in Cola, we were a 7 point favorite. That equates to the favored team winning roughly 69% of the time. This week, with this spread, the numbers say we're sitting at a 90% chance of winning.

When Ole Miss has played on the road against an SEC team they win roughly 25% of those games (2003-2013.) When they've played a ranked team they are 2-13 on the road. One of those two wins came when Ole Miss was ranked—2008 versus Florida.

Yes, in the end, history doesn't exactly repeat itself ALL the time. But my gawd, it happens A LOT!

Don't ya just love the smack talk?! Haha Makes the game fun!... I'm afraid Ole Miss will catch the buzz saw this week.

Is it just me or is Sabans coaching becoming more predictable? He seems to control the score to control the temperament of the players and the character of the team. Did you noticed how tame his demeanor on the sidelines during the Co St. game. I believe he lets the team flounder to have teaching points. Maybe I'm giving him way too much credit...lol. My point being, there's only so many Knute Rockne speeches you can give to be effective. This is a SEC game... We match up way to well against this Miss team...Look out Rebs

I don't think 'Bama is downplaying Ole Miss for a second. They have said on several occassions that Ole Miss played them the toughest last year. They needed this game to focus on the details. It is just gonna come down to how long we maintain our focus. If we do, this game should really be close.

Ole Miss gave us a run for a most of the game last year, and I expect a more explosive offense this year from them. They have shown their ability to break a big play. I do feel as if their receivers are better than Texas A&M's. They're young, had a good recruiting class, are looking good right now, so I feel as if they've earned the right to talk a little trash. As long as it doesn't come after a loss, what do you expect from a competitive sport? You're the number one team in the country and will have people gunning for you all year, so let them have their fun trying to supplant the king. If we're not careful, a hungry squad will come in and knock us off. I mean, it happened last year, albeit with the future Heisman winner under center, but still.

How did Ole Miss give us a run last year?

I've seen people say this time and time again and I simply do not get where the idea comes from. (Not trying to single you out here 334...you just happened to mention something I've seen countless times. :twothumbs: )

They had a lead of one point for less than 30 seconds in the ball game. Out of their 12 possessions, seven were four plays or less. Only two drives of significance out of those 12 possessions. Their offense didn't do anything except for those two scoring drives and only one of those actually had any bearing—the first to take a one point lead.

Their defense did a good job against us in the red zone last season holding the team to FG's on four different occasions.

If you think about that last sentence it's easy to see how close that game to being in the area of a 33 point win—47-14.

TerryP,

I feel as if they showed the ability to play us tight and score quickly. Obviously the score shows differently, but the game never appeared out of reach until the fourth quarter in my eyes. We hit two touchdowns pretty quickly, but like you said, being held to field goals is what makes me say it was closer than was expected. I feel as if they played us as tightly as anyone besides Georgia last year, which played us better than anyone, even LSU.

There's another thing I don't get.

They didn't score quickly. Both scoring drives were more than 10 plays each. I know one was a 16 play drive, the other I want to say was close to that...maybe 14 plays?

Simply put, I see that game differently than a lot...or so it seems. Heck, I look at a 27-7 score at the half and that is a game out of reach for Ole Miss.

I can understand that, but also, what are the chances we run a 99 yard kick return back? We had one all year. When you look at the yardage both offenses put up they are pretty similar, especially considering one team won the National Championship and the other won seven games. It was a down game for our offense and the way we drilled other teams all year, this was a sub par game on our behalf. Was it Ole Miss or a game we played down to the competition? That's up to the individual's opinion.
