The Number ā€œ3″ Remains a Factor in Bama Win.
October 18, 2008

By Terry Pellman (TerryP)

When looking at the Ole Miss contest last Sunday I was struck by the number of times the number ā€œ3″ had a bearing on the contest between the Tide and the Rebels. When I wrote the Ole MIss Preview, it seemed with every point there was a link that kept falling back to a single digit.

Alabama entered this game against the Houston Nutt coached Rebels as it had three times in the past only to leave those contest with its first loss of that season. While this fourth contest didn’t continue that trend with Alabama winning by 4, 24-20, it was a lot closer than most Bama fans would have believe at the beginning of the 3rd quarter with the Tide up 24-3.

Yet, once again, even with the number 4 entering the picture, the number 3 still had it’s place in Alabama’s 4th SEC win. With this victory Alabama reaches its 300th all-time victory at Bryant-Denny Stadium. (Alabama has played 362 of its 650 home games in Tuscaloosa: 300-59-3.)

Thanks for the write-up Terry. All kinds of irony today. I just knew when Nutt went to Ole Miss we had a new enemy to face every season. As if it's not challenging enough!

You know what's scary? Right now we are 4-0 in conference. We've got 4 more SEC games, and we should win them all. We could also very well lose each one!

Also #3 should be player of the game

Kareem Jackson

The Player of the Week, at least here at RTB.com, is Bo's call to make. IF it were mine, I would say they very same thing.

There's a reason it was his picture I used in the review...not only because he wears number three, but his play today was superb!

This morning, looking back over some of the game, I can't say enough about how much respect I have for Coach Nutt. (Any Arkansas lurkers are more than welcomed to disagree with me here...you've done it at HogsSportsTalk.com :D )

As example, in the first half Ole Miss was stacking the box and leaning heavily to the TE side of our line. So, we started running more to the other side of the line...which, after the half, they made a great adjustment to...

Preparation for a game like this one, much like we've mentioned here this week, isn't the easiest thing to do. I got a laugh out of what Cory Reamer said late last week when he used the term "gimmick" to describe Nutt's approach. That wasn't a "dig" at the offense, but a reference to the number of things they do on offense.

If you haven't realized it yet, they had no success with their Wild Rebel formation. But, when they lined up with an empty backfield and McCluster at QB they had some success. Coach Saban remarked last night it was something they hadn't prepared to defend. Only a certain amount of time each week, ya know?

The QB draw Ole Miss ran was a great call out of a 5 wide set as well. In fact, fantastic call!

I agree Terry. I think Nutt is one of the more under rated coaches in the country. He's such a great motivator too, and you know his players would have to LOVE playing for him.
