Official Depth Chart / Roster released

Now we're bring how they were ranked in high school into play? If so now we're back to a comment earlier in this thread--it's a comparison that's premature. And this sentence--"has often been compared to Minkah Fitzpatrick in terms of ability to play anywhere in the secondary"--has nothing to do with how a kid was ranked

It's just a compliment to Surtain at this point. Don't overthink it. Minkah and Eddie didn't have the same path. Eddie's sophomore year he was getting picked on quite a lot at cornerback. His Junior year they moved Eddie to safety. Losing most of our starting safeties, including Landon Collins the previous year, it was almost made out of necessity. As it turned out, it was a natural position for him and he dominated that position at Bama immediately. We now had a safety that had corner skills for all these spread happy teams we were playing and getting torched.

I don't see how that mirrors Fritzpatrick in the way we used him all over the field. Minkah was called a strong safety but Bama was using him all over the field each game. He often lined up more as a slot corner than a safety. Every blue moon he even went to outside corner. In the championship game against Georgia, Minkah lined up primarily as a nickelback/linebacker. That's the type of in-game versatility that is being described for Surtain.

I'm not over thinking anything here that I can see. These "player A is like player B" when player A hasn't played...the cart is ahead of the horse.

Don't forget here...Eddie was moved to safety after he lost a step as much as anything. His injury precipitated the move but kept him on the field.

So much for paying him a compliment. And it's the preseason, where else would you put the cart?

Leave it in the barn until its season.

It get it. Our LSU friends...mentioned to them about two weeks ago they'd be cussing the name Surtain before the season was over. It's a pet peeve--hate the comparisons when they're drawn out of the blue.

I am still questioning to myself why Leatherwood was moved to Right Guard.

Anything to do with a southpaw QB? Just asking
It's my understanding he has stayed at RG because he's better in confined spaces (like you'll see from the G position versus the T spot.) The move followed Leatherwood being nicked up a bit in practice and it's remained that way.

Leatherwood / Wills gives the interior a better "road grading" potential than Wills / Leatherwood is how a few players have described the change.

I realize a lot are still hung up on the "blindside" aspect of a quarterback's protection. I'm not. If we saw the QB's coming out from under center I'd have the same thought. But, with so many snaps coming out of the pistol and shotgun? How much of a blindside does he really have?

Interesting note:

We don't have a single starting receiver that's taller than 6'1", so creating separation will be key. 50/50 balls in tight coverage will be much more easily defended with no decided height advantage over a majority of DBs.

Kief ( 6'4") and Shavers (6'6") are both heavily involved in the rotation. Plus Ruggs and Jeudy have the ability to jump out of the gym!!!

True, but have you SEEN Kief much at all since he's been here, outside of garbage time snaps? I don't remember his name being called much at all. Not sure about Shavers, since he's a young'un.

He has been more involved in the scrimmages this year.

I did see Kief's name mentioned in tweets about scrimmages, crediting him with some nice catches.

Maybe this is his year. Hope so. I still remember his commitment video a few years ago. Didn't he commit on ESPN? Pretty highly rated receiver, just hasn't been able to significantly crack the rotation (for whatever reason) since he came here all the way from Ohio.

He's a RS junior, so hopefully we start seeing him showing up in the box stats a lot more. Having 3 true sophomores ahead of him doesn't seem to bode well though. And considering that we run a lot of 3-wide, 1-tight sets still has me doubtful.

@Sgt. Lincoln Osiris throw in a Rfr in Townsend and Shavers and 2 true frosh in Waddle and Williams, this WR corps is DEEP and young!!!

That's a LOT of bodies with only so many catches to go 'round. Especially if we're still going to be ultra-balanced even with Tua at the helm. I doubt very seriously that we'll see more than 25 pass attempts a game as an average. Who knows, though. Coach may just turn Tua loose.

I put it out on another thread about the number of attempts per season under Saban and that we likely wouldn't see a ton since we should have a dominant run game.
JPW averaged 35.5 attempts in '07
AJ averaged 25, 22.8, and 25.8 in his tenure
Blake Sims averaged 27.9 in his lone year.

If Tua is indeed the man, I would look for AJ type numbers. The ability of the downfield passing game makes a defense keep both safeties back and thus opens up our run game, just like it did for Richardson, Lacey, and Yeldon. OH LORT!!!!!!!!

There is this expectation of Alabama throwing up 500 yards per game, most of that in the air, and 60 points. Gonna be a lot of people disappointed.

I have an expectation that I don't want to see a safety in the box this season. For those victims so unwise, may the Lord have mercy on their soul.
They will. You have to stop one aspect of the game.

Not sure about Shavers, since he's a young'un.

Over the summer and fall I've probably heard Shavers name mentioned about as many times as Jeudy. I won't be surprised if we see them get 300+ and five touchdowns on the season out of him. I know they're looking at him as a "get up and get it" type of guy in the end zone.

60 points isn't realistic--there's potential to put up that many but it hasn't been Bama's style under Saban.

Averaging 500 on offense isn't unrealistic. The team(s) has hovered around the 450 mark under Saban. In '14 I recall the number being around 485
